I know we'll still have the Sanouk available in the US, though I've heard rumours that my European brothers may not offer it.

why? have been sanouks sold much more in US than in yurp?
will sanouk be a US-only ski like it was for xplosive in the past two winters before mantra came?
I used sanouks twice on big big big pow days and it was

Since we have squaretail in here, i have a question:

Why are the bases of my mantras made out of black butter? Will they go with the double thick gotama bases on next years mantras?

I'd catch a little crap if I put them up before the show starts--Jan 23. I'll try to post an "update" or two from the show floor sometime that week.

Biglines will also probably have them up by the end the show...those dudes are on it.

The first clue is my avatar...new Gotamas are white...

Well, that's a little bit of a double edged sword. Of all our reeskis, the Mantra has the highest quality base material. We did this because we wanted it to be the most versatile model in the line. However, it is not as thick as the bases on the other skis. I think another poster commented on the bottom sheet of titanal playing a role here - and they are right.

Skis that have metal sheets in the bottom of the layup are more vulnerable to rock damage, because the rocks "slide" on the metal, thus incurring more damage.

So why is the Mantra less stiff and less durable than the Explosive lineage, which is easily the best selling fat ski of all time.... Is this akin to Ford's motto of "engineered consumption"?

Of course, I've found that skis with a metal topsheet on the bottom might not hang on to their ptex as well, but they get far, far less core shots.

I'm with you... I still haven't met a sober individual who can explain to me why white is a good color for a powder ski. They don't look good in photos, worse in video, and even worse when you lose one. What's the fucking point? The Dynastar Flame Bigs and the Rossis were bad enough...

I was skeptical about the white, too. The bases and sidewalls are red, minimizing the chance you'd lose them...and yeah, we think they're pretty sick.

The issues acknowledged in this thread are long gone.

However there more likely to still be skiable after rock damage as the metal layer helps to mitigate damage to the skis core. However if you hit hard enough it will cuase the metal to distort and aid in the delamination process.

After the first day on the mantras, I noticed a 1.5" - 2" core/ metal shot. I had it filled in and it's holding. It was more of a slid over a rock cut than a impact, thus no damage to the metal. Other than that the bases do seem soft compared to my old stormriders and my karmas. Doesn't bother me because they are fun skis, and in my book thats what matters most.
    Harvest the ride.

I just got a mail from Völkl Austria including this:

"For the next season there is no Sanouk anymore, instead there
will be a new Sumo in length 190. Thats now confirmed"

Damn. I wanted a 125mm version of the Sanouks or a longer 198cm/110mm. I just don´t think that the Sumo can replace it with its freestyle appearance.

I'm curious if anyone ever has paid near full price for a pair of Sanouks. Every shop I've seen has the same pair at the end of the season they did at the beginning - and I'd wager every person I've seen skiing a pair got them on a brodeal/internet cheap deal. If thats correct I can see there being no orders for the ski.

Legend Pros, Gotamas, Explosivs etc. actually sell from what I can see (or move from shop walls). And at least a few of the people on them look like they might have paid full nickel. Sanouks sit there - I know of 3 pair in Mammoth, 2 of which are 05-06. None of the others are close to in stock. Compare them on eBay, people pay more for Gotamas than Sanouks - somebody just bought Sanouks for $350 shipped!

    Just a theory.
