I just got a new iBook and I don't mind at all. It'll be a while before:

    1) You can actually get the Intel notebooks
    2) All the kinks are ironed out
    3) The Intel CPUs trickle down to iBook level, which is all I need

Plus I only paid $800 with a free suitcase and printer

I have a 17 inch powerbook and the 20 inch imac. There is no way in hell I would go to a smaller screen for the road. Just because Im traveling doesnt meen that I dont need the screen space to edit.

So which one did your girlfriend throw your cellphone thru, the 17" monitor or the 20" monitor? What's it going to take, her wrecking your truck in a drunken rage? Because that's about all that's left...

What part, the actual truth about his poor computer, or the expectation of getting a phone call from him one night looking for a couch to surf or a ride somewhere?

Well, sure, the Frinkiac-7 looks impressive but I predict that within 100 years
computers will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and
so expensive that only the five richest kings in Europe will
    own them.

Oh, you mean like the RISC architecture that's supposed to be so much better for photo/video work? No wait, that's not right. It's CISC architecture now. And now that the software companies are rewriting their code to take advantage of floating-point performance instead of integer performance, low and behold CISC is now good for photo/video. Oh wait, it must be the one-button mouse that makes macs so good.

for everyone who has ordered a new mac recently, this might be of interest to them: http://abs.apple.com/transition/
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

that thing might as well be a silver paperweight at this point. I'll give you $50 and a pickle.

Nope I mean UNIX with a great UI sitting on top and an over all design end to end. I don't use my Mac for graphic design work so I don’t really now or care about the video rendering ability of either architecture.

I have worked as a UNIX admin for seven years now and I have watched almost every company out there that makes big proprietary "open systems" start the move to x86. Now that Intel and AMD are making 64 bit processors and the ability to cluster lots of small servers the benefit of staying on big iron is getting slowly eaten away. It's inevitable that almost every OS will wind up on x86 in the next few years.

Actually, there was a case for RISC vs. CISC years ago. This is being overly simplistic, but the advantages of each were eroded as both sides started implementing the benefits of both camps. There isn't really any such thing as RISC or CISC anymore.

As for the new PowerBooks, the only major pro app that would give me pause is Photoshop. A binary version (which runs on PPC and Intel) probably won't be out until the end of 2006. Quark already has a beta that runs on Intel, and all the Apple Pro apps (Final Cut, Motion, etc) will be up and running in March.

Lol, the part about you posting that question on here. I had a girlfriend once who threw a glass at my head then kicked a hole in my bedroom door, all because I told her she had had enough to drink. Now that we're not dating anymore I don't care. But it was really emberassing for the two weeks after that before I replaced the door. I kept getting the "Dude! What happened to your door." question. I think the most emberassing part was having to admit that I was still dating her after that.

I'd have to check on some of the 3rd party graphics editing software, but for sure music and video will run native (it was a huge deal to make sure that happened).
Oh sick, native Safari! Dude, my browser is going to run so much faster than yours.

I'd really like to see the numbers on an xp system vs the mac systems running photoshop, quark, illustrator, and premiere (since final cut isn't written for both os's.) and see how much of a real world difference there is these days on the top end machines. Especially if the PC machine was running SCSI drives like mac's used to.

    SATA is the way.
SCSI is going the way of the dinosaur, except a far slower, more painful, more expensive death.
