AHH!!! My wife has been riding my ass every single damn day to buy her a notebook. It has been going on non-stop since before X-mas I told her to hold off. New laptops were coming, just be patient. She continued to give me shit everyday about my season pass and her not having a notebook yet. Her brithday is Friday and I'm sure the gates of hell would've opened up and pulled me in if I didn't have a notebook waiting for on friday. So I bought earlier this week. It arrived yesterday. I guess the machine I bought is only $50 cheaper today, but it still drives me nuts. She has no patience. I told her this was coming and now she may not be satisfied with the gift. AHHHH!!!!!

yeah the new book is sweet, but...
it's gonna be a bit before all the major graphics apps are gonna run native and for a lot of us the graphics, music and video stuff is why we play with macs in the first place.
really that line of thinking is just my mental bandage for purchasing my powerbook this summer. faster suff is always just around the corner and you always kick yourself for not holding out for the new shit.
the new books are gonna rock and when the software comes up to run native on the chip... watch the hell out!
I bought the iMac G5 iSight the day it came out 2 months ago and it's already datedI keep telling myself that the bench mark they used heavily favors Intel chips and that it would be a pita to have to deal with apps that have not been converted yet but it still hurts especially when the new Intel iMac is a dual core!
Apples stock is doing great since there intel announcement yesterday, up about another 3% today!
Oh look, Apple is making PCs now.
it would be at least a month, MINIMUM before you could actually get one of the MacBooks in your hands. Another month of nagging. So you probably did the right thing in pulling the trigger.Originally Posted by meatdrink9
I've been waiting for the Centrino Duo / Napa notebooks myself. Supplies of the Centrino Duo chip are probbly in short supply right now since they're still ramping up production. Dell and Apple will probably be getting their products out the door first due to sweetheart deals with Intel. The others are close behind though.

Funny, their new cpu is x86 based.Originally Posted by Lurch

Linux runs on Intel but I would not call the one of the x445 running Linux in my server room a PC. Just because it's running on Intel hardware does not make it a PC. All most everything that makes it different than a Windows box is still there.Originally Posted by likwid

Therefore new Macs are PCs.
Also Apple has openly said they are not going to stop anyone from installing XP on the Macbooks.
So once it has XP on it does it become a PC then zippy?

Actually, that's not true--that's why the big announcement of being 6-months ahead of schedule was so huge. All the Apple software (iWork, iLife, Safari, etc) will run native w/o the use of the Rosetta translator. I'd have to check on some of the 3rd party graphics editing software, but for sure music and video will run native (it was a huge deal to make sure that happened).Originally Posted by BC-FLOW
While there are still two more factories ramping, the one making the chips that are going out now has been cranking for a few months now (at record output/speed). You're correct that Dell and Apple are coming out first (Apple now and Dell on 16 Jan), but the others will be closer than you might think. Expect the new Sony VIAO FE to be on the shelves in early Feb.Originally Posted by DerJaeger

Thanks for the advice. They just credited back my card for the difference in price. Very cool.
The announcement wouldn't change which machine I bought. It's for my wife to balance the books and have her own machine. There's already way more computer there than she needs. It all works out in the end. I'm glad I held out as I long as I did so I was still eligible for the price break.
Of course they won't stop people from loading XP it would be next to imposible and pointless. It becomes a PC when it's an ugly clone running any M$ productOriginally Posted by likwid
or IBM half ass attempt at a desktop OS.
The MacBook uses Intel's new EFI bootloader hardware, not BIOS. Windows Vista is/will be EFI compatible, but Windows XP isn't. It's my understanding that you won't be able to boot a MacBook to Windows XP unless the MacBook has specifically shipped with a compatibility module to allow it.Originally Posted by Lurch
Wait until they put out the desktop G5's... rumor has it that is when they'll be releasing the 17" Powerbook...but who really wants a damn laptop that big anway...get the 15 and then hook it to a desktop display when you're doing your photo stuff.Originally Posted by mtbakerskier
