    Set Me Straight (Utah)

Since joining TGR I've read a lot of posts and enjoyed a lot of unreal trip reports. I've come to the conclusion that the sking I get to to is pretty weak compared to the skiing I could be doing. To hit up Colorado or Utah for some real powder (and mormon girls) is definately on my to do list.

I live in B.C, Canada and have a lot of good hills available to me, but something about flying to SLC and spending 4 days at Snowbird kind of appeals to me.

I'm definately willing to quit drinking and eat Kraft Dinner 3x a day for a month to be able to afford lift tickets after the exchange rate.

Is my reasoning sound? Is it really that good? Or should I stay home because it sucks? I don't want to pay $200 for return airfair, and $60 a day for lift passes if the sauce is generally weak.

    I need the straight dope.

if you have to buy your plane tickets and make arrangements in advance then it might be sweet, might suck.
if you can watch the weather reports, wait til Red Baron says its going to be 'really really really good' and fly out at the drop of a hat, it will probably be the best 4 days of skiing in your life.

I basically agree with Fez. Since I come from the flatlands it’s real easy to get to Alta/Bird at the last minute. But I am not sure I would come from BC, if you were having a good year. The skiing in LCC is some of the best, but since it’s so close to a major metropolitan area, it can be frenzy on big days.

I've had better days at Fernie, just because no one was there.

I've planned trips to Utah plenty of times and every time I leave Utah, it starts snowing. This year, I'm doing the drop of a hat thing. I'm going to wait for some storms to stack up and buy my ticket then. The extra $150-$200 the ticket will cost me will be worth it.

So, if I were you, I'd go to Utah the day I am leaving. It's sure to start snowing right around then.

True words, and it's getting worse. I can't believe how many people are on the LCC slopes now. And they don't go away after 2PM like they used to.

I saw the storm comming into SLC after new yrs, i bought my ticket same day and it only cost an extra 150$. Camped at Motel 8 for 40 bucks a night and had the best 3 days of POW in a long time. BUt then again it was my first trip to POW MOW. Bottom line is, if you can be flexible, chase the storms. SLC is cheap too.

Would it not be easier for you to road trip it W/B or Baker? I hear they aren't getting any snow recently. You got a car and a winter sleeping bag? Road trip it around BC.

I did some thinking, and I'm inclined to believe that it would be a lot cheaper and a lot less trouble to follow storms around BC, and bum sled rides off of friends. Flying to Utah would definately be cool, but I think I may save that till my bank account reads a positive number. It will happen one day though.

I don't think they can set you straight in liberal BC? I'm pretty sure Utah is a better bet.

Where are finding $200 return flights to SLC from BC? I'm in Calgary and was pricing out a week trip, it was looking to be 500-600+ Canadian return to SLC from here.

I would do the the BC tour. Sounds like your local hill is Sun Peaks or Silver Star from some of your previous posts. I would wait until March and plan a week long road trip. You could head out on the Trans Canada hit Golden and Maybe sneak up to Louise and Sunshine. And then you could go down and hill Castle and Fernie. From there head out to White Water and Red Mountain. Then you could even hit up Big White and Apex on the way home. March could be a pretty sick month in BC if the trend over the past couples of years holds true. Fernie always has some sick days in March, and the base/snowpack is building up pretty quick this year. We are already at the 2.5 meter mark for the upper mountian. (PS:Anti Jinix)

Considering that for the price of lift tix and lodgings and plane tix you could get a full backcountry setup and an avvy class and considering that the Monashees are ON YOUR FRIGGIN DOORSTEP - you'd be insane to do it.

HAving said that; I skied 7 days straight in Alta/Bird/Solitude with light fluffies every day back in 1992 when a nice well-off relative paid the way and had the time of my life.
