compared to NYC, Miami, and SF?? Its obviously ain't big enough to convince this guy that its worth showing the film.Originally Posted by lemon boy
I'm not arguing against showing the film. Just pointing out that his motivations were very likely financially related.

Just stop. You really think a guy as wealthy as Larry Miller is checking the financial performance of every movie that he's playing in his theatre chain? Larry Miller, a guy who owns 7 bazillion car dealerships, the Utah Jazz, and seemingly half of SLC, really gives a shit whether or not each screen is profitable? Just stop.Originally Posted by CUBUCK

Yes, Larry Miller has ridiculous amounts of money.
but at some level it's got to be (mostly) a financial thing.
he'd be at more financial risk if the majority of the SLC population chose to BOYCOTT his theater FOR showing it. which is a bigger problem than those attempting to boycott for not showing it.

I heard the Century Theatre in SLC @ 33S and the West Jordan theatres that are running the movie are about ready to shut down because of the intense boycott the public is running. And you don't even want to hear about what the film society is enduring due to its support of the flick.![]()
The truth is, its just another rich bigot trying to impose his morality on others. And thats fine - he owns the theatre and can do whatever he wants. But why even bother trying to defend it with financial reasons?
Many a bigot has thrown their beliefs out the window for money. Might have been a no-brainer for Miller - he conveniently gets to be a bigot and say it was simply a financial decision.
But what, for instance, should he have decided to show the film, if the church said it would tell all the bishops to tell their wards not to buy Larry Millers cars ever again? I think the scope of the financial impact would increase exponentially. It's not just a matter of boycotting his theaters, stump. When religion, politics, and money comingle like lonely cowboys, influence is created and some people either crumble or fight.
(but I heard the sheep were relieved when those guys in the movie fell for each other)
Since Larry Miller is a Mormon, where's the surprise that he refused to show Brokeback Mountain?
He based his decision, not on profit, but on the bigotry of his religion. The LDS are hardly welcoming to gays.
I'm amazed Miller let Rent slip by. Maybe, he didn't understand the plot.

A little more so than you may think. I believe the church's stand point on homosexuality is that its okay to be gay, just not sexually active gay. That said its not okay to be a sexually active heterosexual before marriage.Originally Posted by cloudpeak
On the other hand the highly mormon community here was in an uproar when they where filming. A big push for businesses to refuse services to the film crew and boycott those that did serve them. Not much came of it though, calmer minds said "grow up and shut the fuck up".
