The gate to Hell probably wasn't a good place to build condos.

"Crews battled the fire through sever weather conditions"

Does this mean if you were out fighting the fire without gloves you'd lose your fingers?

I've got to admit, I laughed.

Though that's a serious bummer about the condos. Glad no one was hurt.

that's actually not very funny at all Iceass and I can't believe you're laughing at it either Cawknee

anybody that knows anything 'bout Alta knows that Hellgate and all that it is guards the gates not to Hell, but Heaven for the pow skiing universe. so many days every year on the drive up the Canyon it is only cloudy at the Bird, then you get by Hellgate and little flurries start spitting; then by the time you get to the Collins lot it is full on dumping. plus that place holds the sickest limestone climbing in all of Utah for your summer pleasure.

hope Alta's powder skiing karma is not thrown off kilter by this

The Snow Gods are showing there anger about all the talk about allowing snowboarders at Alta. It's time to up the contributions.

Oh put a sock in it.

You're lecturing me but all you really care about is the "powder karma". Get serious.

What a sight to see when we had to go up the bypass road, just flames and smoke and the smell was potent while standing in line.

Really sad day in Alta, but the skiing was great and the wind made it even better.

Good vibes to those who lost everything up there.

Edit: Natty was out skiing with everyone else, it's not by his place.
Oh, and if this thread starts a flame war, we have hit rock bottom, that is just not right. Stop it you two.

I guess you're talking about the skiing, not the fire?

I don't know any details but really want to give props to

    A) the condo mgmt

    and

    B) Unified Fire Authority

for being able to manage this without injury. That's huge.

Even working on your theory Xover, I'd say its the Hellgate Cliffs that guard the entrance, not some condos named after them...

Anyway, watching the news last night it was interesting about the metal roofs causing additional issues with trying to put out the fire. Never thought about that. Though I guess with the weather conditions and access it probably wasn't going to happen no matter what.

For those of us that missed that news report can you offer up an explanation?

They just said something about in addition to not being able to see for shit, they were having trouble getting water into the burning building because of the metal roofs typically used in the area. I'd imagine a wood roof might burn through quicker so they could shoot water in through it?? They didn't really go into detail, it was just a quick comment. And I don't know a damn thing about firefighting so maybe I read into it wrong.

They also had water pressure issues since Alta is at the end of the water line.

Firefighters typically bust through the roof of a burning building to ventilate it, letting smoke and heat out so they can get inside and search for victims and fight the fire. Metal roofs can make this very difficult to accomplish.
