It's designed to work when clogged with snow...like being burried in an avalanche. The article said a guy was able to breathe for 2 hours in a controlled buriel. Controlled vs real can be a lot different but BD is going to sell the hell out of this thing.

hmmm. it seems they definitely want to go into the ABS/Avalanche Ball backpack market (Although i do not know if the ABS or the Ball are sold in bigger numbers in the US) .
i guess I'd rather go with the normal Avalung and save my money for an ABS backpack. I'd rather double my chances of survival than having to decide which system to use.

Wearing my Avalung under my BCA Stash pack hasn't been an issue. But if I was in the market for a new pack, I would consider the Avalung pack.

We were doing some Yo Yo skiing last week and I did get some comments about wearing an Avalung inbounds. But I never even considered taking it off.

x3 and I own an avalung 2 already. I just want to reduce the amount of stuff I have to take off and on every time I add or remove layers.

One thing I would like to know is how more likely is the avalung backpack to be ripped off your back than an avalung 2?

Exactly. Not to mention one less piece of gear to have to worry about losing, damaging, or getting in the way. I think it's brilliant. PLUS a built in camelbak? Sheeeeeeeiiiiiiitt!

A really gnar avalanche can rip your pack off.

but you probably wouldn't be able to keep an avalung mouthpiece in during a ride like that anyway?

That's what I was thinking. The avalung 2 is pretty small and seems a lot less likely to be ripped off your body than a big, full pack with all that extra mass. Even if you can't keep the mouthpiece in your mouth if the thing's still on you at least you have a chance to try for the mouthpiece during/after the ride, if your pack's gone then that option obviously isn't there anymore.

Presumably, this thing is extra burly and strong so that the pack wont fail and get ripped off that way.

ABS airbag packs are extra burly for that and also have leg straps (to keep it from being slid over your head I guess).

I will buy one. I think it is a great extra feature that I never want to use.
I have been avoiding avalungs based on the hassle/layering factor. If it is built into the pack, that is a non-issue. If you get the tube in your mouth and keep it there, it will prolly save your life.

20 minute burial from a small slide is not out of the question.
That will kill you if you dont have an air pocket or an avalung.

But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
    Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason
