I am on year number 6 of cube monkeyism and at age 27 every year that goes by is one year less that I am skiing in my prime. Did I mention that I am stuck in NEW JERSEY? Shoot me now.

    Congratulations on your decision.... asshole.
I take that as a compliment dude.

It's been 6 years coming for me. Wanted to go when I finished university, but had the debt to take care of. Got that first entry level job post university, worked in custodial banking. Pay was shit, the experience was good, I was commuting 1.5 hours each way, skiing and riding very little, didn't pay off any of the school debt. It eat me apart, only mtbing on weekends and night skiing once week.

Quit that after 2.5 years, without a replacement job to go to. Worked a month of construction. Got this sweet high paying gig with Honda, but chained to a cube for the next 3 years. Was night skiing 5/6 nights a week, riding 3 nights plus weekends. Got all the debt paid and took some sweet road trips chasing pow on my vacations. This gave me a better taste of the quality of life I wanted.

It was looking at houses here this spring that I sat down and did some soul searching to make the decision. My advice is do it, move. Life ain't no rehersal. Follow YOUR dreams.

I'll be on West 1st Ave, next to Jericho park across from the yatch club. My cousin lives on 2nd Ave in Kits. Got some great local beta from them.

But need beta on a good ski shop and bike shop. Also what pubs to find the hot single ski chicks

This is the key to it all...I moved from San Diego to Colorado 3 years ago and have not one regret. I moved to be closer to the snow and mountains and had to move a reluctant family at the same time (talk about issues...)

At 28 you have so much time to left to do whatever you want and more. At 45 it seemed easy once I did it!!!

    Congrats and have fun!!!

Ski shop: There's 3 within a block or two of W 4th & Burrard: Snowcovers and Comor Sports being the better ones.

Bike shop: West Point Cycles, just West of Alma & West 10th is excellent and quite close to where you'll be. Not as big a selection as say, Cove Bikes or Henry's on the North shore, but they're solid people. Excellent customer service and give deals to loyal customers.

Pubs: I think the UBC crew are the right guys to answer this one (but I will throw in a recommendation for Bimini's on Friday nights)

Congrats shirk. nice neighbourhood BTW. as for local pubs to pick up hot ski chicks, i think you need to consider the whistler pubs as your local pubs. if you are going to continue with your night skiing escapades, may i recommend Cypress Bowl over the other 2. get your pass for whistler yet? have some fun mon, sure beats the hell out of TO! MTB is going to open your eyes wide too. and if you ever get tired of the coast, please don't come to Fernie- we've already got way too many of youse guys.

shirk - don't be surprised to meet lots of other TO types out here escaping. From your place you'll be able to take pics of apple blossoms blooming on trees, ski hills with fresh snow; UBC windsurfing club chicas in tight wetsuits; hardbody rollerbladers and roadies all on the same day within the same hour. But for now just concentrate on the fact that whistler has gotten 10cms or more snow for the last 2 weeks straight.

Not to be a downer but your area is reknowned for Break and enters. In fact all of vancouver is a B&E capital. Get some tenants or homeowners insurance. I use Johnston Meier 604 736 - 4574 as they're inexpensive and always call back quickly or have a human being on the phone. Plus their bike and ski rates are good.

Lee is not kidding about break and enters around here. I live in a building with better security than average, yet in 3 years I've had:

    • my car broken into 3 times
    • my car stolen once
    • my mail stolen once
    • to intervene to prevent two other break & enters.

The last incident was just 3 weeks ago. By some stroke of luck, I happened to be working from home that day, when at around 10am someone attempted to smash open my front door with a crowbar.

This was no gentle prying - this was a full on attempt to smash the door open regardless of sound or effort. Paint was flaking off the door everywhere as it bulged in under the assault - he was leveraging the hell out of the door and throwing himself at it with all his might. It sounded like he was attacking it with a sledge hammer. For a split second I wasn't sure exacty what the hell was going on -- dumb as it sounds, my first thought was that it was the fire department evacating the building or something. So I said something like "oh my goodness me! how may I assist you?". The assault on the door stopped and I went straight after him - but the lock and door were so mangled and warped that it took me a good 15 - 20 seconds to get it open enough to get out. He had too much of a head start on me, so I wasn't able to catch him before he dissapeared into the crowds on the street. A shame, really because I really, really wanted to nab one of these bastards for a change.

I'm just glad that he chose my place first though. The apartment across the hall from mine was unlocked and the only person home at the time was a 15 year old girl. I shudder to think what the outcome might have been had he choosen that apartment instead. I suspect the intruder was strung out on crystal meth, which makes people very violent and unpredictable.

I'm so sick of dealing with this sort of thing that I'm sorely tempted to run for government just to be able to bring some semblance of sanity back to the streets (well, that and to institute a mandatory "Bros for everyone" policy platform).

This rant aside -- I don't think Point Grey is quite as bad as Kitsilano.

Thanks for the recommendation on insurance and heads up on B&E. Guess thats one thing I have to remind myself about being in the city rather than small town Ontario. My parents haven't locked the doors on their house in 29 years. I'll need some renters ins once I get settled.

Hopefully a job with flexable hours will allow more midweek day skiing and I can forget about joys of being a night skier. Kicking myself for not getting a W/B pass in the fall when the rates were lower, missed the deadline on Edge card. I'll be looking for any and all ways to scam cheap W/B tickets.

Good on ya mate. I am also one of the cube monkeys wishing I was in your shoes. The more feel good stories, the closer I am to telling off the man.

Be sure to post up about the trip as it goes. Keeps us all jealous as hell but with hope.

Well said. I am married - which plays a major role in my decision making, but I am slowly starting to sell my wife on moving to Vermont. Maybe in 3 or 4 years.
