    mantra base

was skiing my new mantra's today on some decent snow when i took a turn and caught a rock which resulted in a pretty nasty core shot and a bent edge... noticed the base on the mantra's seems quite thin compared to my scratch bc's which have taken numerous shots as well... this a volkl thing? didnt think i hit the rock that hard... just a curious question... 3rd day on em

The reason why this happened is because there is a layer of metal right below the base in the mantra. When you mashed that rock it tears the soft P-tex and stops at the metal layer. Resulting in the "core shot" but really all you most likely need to do is a baseweld or ptex/epoxy the shot. I havent seen the actual ski you have, but when that happened to my G4's and on my mantra two weeks ago thats what looked like to me.

Drop some PTex in the shot and get out and rip them, these skis truly are incredible.

i have four days on mine so far, so not a long timeline. but i recall ducking into the trees a couple weeks ago, hearing the rock, and just thinking to myself "shitshitshitshit. not new skis." amazingly, they held up alright...just needed some p-tex. no core shot.

i own G3s as well and they held up quite well through abuse, actually. no issues other than numerous scratches and one distressed edge/core shot. definitely don't ski as hard as some here, though.

Volkl reference manual says: "All the Freeskiing models, except hte Mantra, use double-thick Okulen base material for added protection against rock damage. The Mantra has an Electra 2000 base."

So they use a IMS Electra 2000 graphite performance racing base on the Mantra. Keep off the rocks.

I tuned my Mantras last night. One tiny little ding went to the metal - was very surprised how thin bases are. The Orange Pastic sidewalls seem a little soft/vunderable although presume just cosmetic? Otherwise they seem to have held up reasonably well with just a few longer scrapes.

The edge is likely more of an issue versus the base. I suggest making the bad edge your outside one so it less of a problem.

i got it fixed so it looks good as new now...

i think the first commenter was correct in saying the base is thin towards the edge because thats where the edge itself comes into the base layer. mmmmm graphite base eh? does that mean i can use graphite waxes on em?

Cirquerider--Does the manual say anything about the Gotama base (some are white, others are black...even in the same size).

We did learn that the color is not related to the size...but I'm just wondering if they are different composition.

    Thanks!

Gotama Base is double thick Okulen. Not as fast/soft/permeable, but can take a rock shot and stay together.

Yeah, i'm a little worried about the bases. First day on my mantras and i've got a 4 inch long core shot from a minor rock hit.

So what have we learned today about the Mantras? (I am an owner) ....... Ski on snow not rocks.
