I'd be in for dinner, probably not for cat skiing (unless the price is too good to pass up).

I'll be arriving one the 3rd (mid afternoon), leaving on the morning of the 10th.

Good for cat skiing and dinner(s). Staying at the base of Creekside (Legends). Looks like I will have the extra bedroom in the condo available. Two single beds.

Also be up there Feb 6-10 if anyone wants to do some turns.

Bruce / skieast (and really happy that Air Canada just called to tell me that they have found my lost baggage, ski boots, jacket, etc. Was just contemplating the bank loan required to replace everything when the phone rang).

Here's some of the terrain where they ski; I took the pics from a trip

The cost is $ 480 a person plus lunch and breakfast but I think I can get you guys a deal. The price drops a lot if I can get 12 bodies to fill a cat and drops even more if you can ski on Friday. 10,000 ft vertical.

The terrain is in an area called Cypress and Tricouni Peak about half an hour from whistler

Here's a panorama of the views to expect.

You can get alpine bowls or glades depending on conditions

It llooks like this but with about 3m more snow now

That's what Im trying to negotiate now. Its complicated because only 3 people have committed so far. I figure I can get it down to 300 bucks Canadian plus breakfast and lunch but that's what my buddy has said. His boss still has to OK it.

    leelau,

how many runs does $300 bucks get you. also what can the guide guarantee us for terrain. our we allowed to ski what we want. are we allowed to hike to terrain we want if the cat doesnt take us right to it. or do we have to ski boring 30 degree open pow bowls which i could do by hiking to oboe.

one more question when do you need to know by

    re cat skiing;

phil - honestly I don't know. I would hope they'll be fine with it but guides are usually antsy about clients wondering away so I'd have to say I doubt it but we could always ask. I've skinned into tricouni and had 7k days touring. If the runs they're thinking are what Im thinking then you're looking at 4 to 5 runs.

Mtnman - of course you can get a ride. That's not a problem. They meet at whistler anyway.

skieast - I'll try to figure it out but so far Im kinda dealing with airy-fairy numbers. Lots of time to figure this out I guess

Figure no, their insurance wouldn't cover clients going off on their own. And anyone who decided to wonder away from the group would cause the guide to clamp down totally, and then you would be skiing 30 degree slopes.

The 'secret' to cat skiing is to have a group of ripping skiers who listen and do exactly what the guide says. This makes them comfortable about taking you into terrain that could be sketchy if you wander outside the defined boundarys. Take off down a ridge that is outside where they wanted you to ski on an early run or end a run below, or a long way from where the guide comes out and you will pay for it the rest of the day. Guides do not have a sense of humour about things like that.

    Trigger = pulled

I know I've been a super-lurker/new guy round here for the past year, but figured this sounds like an absolute blast (after reading the stories from last year) and would love to ski with some of you guys, so I just pulled the trigger.

Flying outta Jerz Thursday the 2nd (arriving late) and I'll be there til Wednesday the 8th. I'm down for pretty much whatever, and am def interested in catting if its gonna happen while I'm there.

Got some friends that'll be there on the 5th, but I'm flying solo til then. If anyone has any ideas for cheap lodging I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Oh, and for all the Cali mags, I'll be rolling thru Mammoth and maybe Tahoe after that with another dude (non-mag) til the 16th so if anyone is around gimme a shout.

    Talking

Alright, ALLRIGHT, fine, I'll come, you guys finally talked me into it. I guess that means i will be booking a flight tomorrow, or Tuesday. I am going Solo on this one so will be staying in the shoestring (if they have any availabilities) or another hostel (and i have a pretty sweet list of them if anyone needs some info)

Let me know how i can pitch in, if at all. British Columbia here I come (again)

I hope it rains alot like last year... That was alot of fun

Edit: I plan to come for the whole week, flying into Vancover on the 3rd and back out on the 10th, I will let you know exactly whats going on once i make some phone calls in the morning. I am trying to go through some of the summit threads and catch myself up on whats going on.

I won't be able to get any decent pricing on cat skiing as there aren't enough comfirmed skiers.

What I will do is make reservations for restaurants on the weekends when people are going to be skiiing at more reasonably priced restaurants:

    Friday - Zen Sushi

    Saturday - Carambas

You can bet on eating for about $ 20 at each place w.o drinks etc.

I'll book a table of 10 for each place that night and if we have more then that you'll have to take care of yourself. Again without any input or numbers I can't make plans and can't expect the restaurant owners to cut me breaks. If I knew for sure that 30 people would show up on any of those nights I'd reserve a block but I figure the chances of getting that organized are slim to none.

I'll go up and ski wed, thurs, friday, sat so I can show people around. I'm pretty sure pow111 will do the same. pow is that ok with you? My wife will probably be along to kick some ass Canadian grrl style. Depending on conditions we may do the b/c thing in which case whoever is stuck inbounds is stuck inbounds.

I've talked Escape Route into lining up AT and tele and bc gear rentals with a bit of a maggot price - break.

If you want hookups for a bc guide or for Extremely Canadian or if you want to get a 2 for 1 deal for a Dave Murray Ski Camp lesson let me know in advance and I'll do that- its up to you to arrange that yourself.

You guys are coming at pretty much the peak of the season and its that expensive time of the year. I just can't get much of a deal without having numbers.

I can get discount ski rentals too at Snowcovers. Again pm me if you want that. They're in Village North.

    My nuggets of wisdom...

    Travel:
This is a very easy trip to do without a car if flying into Vancouver...
-There is a shuttle that runs to whistler from the airport every few hours.
-There are also a bunch of limo services that are pretty cheap, and if split between 5 people or more is actually cheaper than the shuttle, and you can talk the driver into stopping at a liquor or grocery store on the way.
-For the super thrifty traveler, there is a shuttle that will take you from the airport to the greyhound station. Buses run from there to Whistler fairly regularly.

Flying into Seattle is decidedly the cheaper way to go
-I ended up not doing it this way because of convenience but when i was crunching the numbers it seemed to save quite a few pennies, especially if you have people to split the rental with.

-This thread has a good break down of how to get from SeaTac to W/B and how not to (starting on post #20), it also discuses the best way to buy booze.

    In whistler

Once you get to W/B in typical intrawest style everything is very close together, they have a good bus system and Taxi’s are reasonable enough. However in typical intrawest style everything is a cluster fuck of tourism

    Accommodation:

After hearing that the shoestring was going to close last year they gave me this list of other hostels in the area... fortunately the shoestring didn’t close, and from what I hear the other places arnt as nice... but here is the list anyway

Nice Droopy, thanks for the info.

I'd love to come in on some catskiing but I am afraid I can't justify the expense. Hope it gets off the ground though.
