    Old Music That Sounds New

All of this new music that sounds old (My Dad on Franz Ferdinand: "I remember them from High School!" Me: "Ummm....") has made me poke around for old music that sounds new.

    Mamas and Papas: Cali Dreaming
The Zombies: Time of the Season
Jefferson Airplane: Someone to Love, White Rabbit

Right now I'm just mining hits, but if anyone has any other suggestions along this vein, let me know!

Some Shuggie Otis, and Jimi of course, sounds as new as anything made today. Some of it sounds like it came from another planet, actually. Herbie Hancock and Miles, too. Buncha other stuff I can't think of right now.

That song, I think it might be called "pain" (it's in the lyrics a lot) by Nirvana, on the live album of unreleased stuff. That sounds like it's 2 years old; not 12 years old.

Early Elvis when he was more blues than country.

Some Pink Floyd songs on Animals and Meddle

    Parliament / George Clinton

Three out of those first three that Joshbu mentioned sound really "60s" to me, so take this with a grain of salt but I'll say Iggy Pop. Especially the solo albums...

Yeah, I agree. You can't hear "White Rabbit" without visions of Haight-Ashbury and the Summer of Love.

Beatles, Zep, Devo because everone is imitating them. Except for System of the Down. WTF did they grow up listening to??!! Their parents fighting on crack with Nirvana and opera in the backround?

The Who - I Can See For Miles. Released as a single more than 38 years ago, and still sounds fresh.

    Worse: Soundgarden.

If you like Slightly Stoopid/Sublime/etc. you should worship the fertile ground that was the New Wave. The Police, The Clash, The Pretenders ....... all can be heard in their music.

A lot of Lou Reed's stuff. Is it because he was so influential, or just ahead of his time?
