6:30 AM found four of us and 3 sleds at the Snake Creek trailhead outside of Midway, UT. Crash course for me in snowmobile driving! after a rocky start in the parking log (how do you turn this thing?), I managed to get a feel for it on the open, snowpacked, and stutter-bumped road. Just as my confidence was building, I saw the other two sleds dive off into the trees and start climbing a steep, off-camber gully. Oh joy! I only dumped it over once, and it was low-speed and easily righted. Then I discovered the joy of roosting at 40mph through wide-open pow fields
I wouldn't pick it as an only sport, but I could see owning one of these things for ski access. Which is why we were there in the first place. Got to the start of the skintrack at about 7:20, right at the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen. Deep purples, pinks, and oranges flashed over Heber Valley, which was still shrouded in a layer of thick fog. House lights sparkled through the fog, creating a mini-universe below as the still-visible stars above began to fade. Unbelievable.
Then there was the skiing: around 15" of pow, super controllable, super fun. A nasty skintrack and some skin stick issues, but otherwise a blast. A lot of cussing and getting pissed off at my bc skiing companions ensued from the technical difficulties, but by the third lap up the skintrack everything was pretty well dialed in. One last steep pow shot to end the day, and back to the biles. And did I mention more fun blasting through big flat pow fields? Yes, there was more of that. In to work by 11am. Can't beat it.
