So i'm going to be sharing a connection off my neighbor who lives like 30 feet away. What's a good deal on a good card? It will be for my pc. Is there a big dif between a54 and a 108 card? I'm not going to be file sharing with him, just using it for internet access. Also, is online gaming pretty much impossible using wireless? Thanks.

Just make sure you set up encryption on it with your bud so others do not tap in.

30 feet is nothing for wifi, should have no problem with any card.

I just bought a Netgear 54 for a home PC, was $40 after rebate. Cable wireless, the PC is over 50 from the cable box. I asked about the 54 and 108, can't remember the mumbo jumbo, but something about the feed coming in on the cable doesn't process 108, so 54 was all I needed.

You're not going to notice the difference between B(10mbps) and G(54mbps) because the highest Internet speed you're going to see these days is around 3mbps. So if you have the money go with the G otherwise B will be fine.

Also, if you find out that your connection is slow, you might want to go this route. I use a Linksy wireless bridge (wet54g) and a wireless router (wrt54g ?) and my connection is much better than before when I was just using a wireless card. Plus I have completely seperated myself (firewalled) from all our other neighbors using the same connection by using the wireless router. The wireless bridge has great range and just passes the signal back and forth seamlessly over to the router.

So if you just go with a wireless card and use encryption, your neighbor(s) is going to be able to see and possibly access any drive or folder that you share. If that's something you're concerned with then you should put a firewall in between... mmkay.

Bzzt! I regularly hit 6-7Mbps on Comcast cable.

Plus, you never know when you'll change your mind and want to trade files with some other wireless machine in the house.

how come i can recieve plenty of signals, without encription, but when i open up my e-mail or explorer they don't register that the signal is coming through.

Just because the computer gets a signal does not mean you are on the network. OSI Layers
