    Greys and Torres area Avy

Reports are sketchy but it looks like someone was caught today...
    9News
BAKERVILLE - The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office is checking to see if anyone was caught in a backcountry avalanche that happened just before 1 p.m.

The avalanche happened two miles up from the Grays & Torreys trailhead on the south side of I-70 near the Bakerville Exit, west of Georgetown.

Crews have set up a staging area at the Bakerville Exit. Traffic on I-70 isn't impacted. 9News has a crew on the way and we'll have more information on 9News at 4 p.m.
    and KMGH
SILVER PLUME, Colo. -- The Alpine Rescue Team is looking for a man who was possibly caught in an avalanche along Interstate 70, west of Silver Plume.

The slide was reported around 1 p.m. and the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Department received a report of a missing climber. The man, reported to be 18 or 19 years of age, was climbing with a partner when the avalanche hit.

A command post has been set up at the Bakerville exit of I-70. Traffic on the interstate was not affected.
Hopefully this nothing or a close call...

CAIC is saying East Side Kelso Mountain. Some triggered slide up on Loveland pass today as well.

    Let's hope nobody got injured.

All of these slides have been from high elevation, steep areas above treeline

"The avalanche is believed to have trapped one person. His companion was partially buried, then dug himself out and went for help."

not good - unprepared or untrained or both?

"going for help" never a good situation....I'd say both.

all the avy teams are on standby here still, I will try and get more info to you guys as it becomes availiable to me. Initial reports were "very large slide, skier triggered". Could be rough to fly in the area, winds were up to and past 65 mph around 2 or 3 this afternoon in the summit area.

WELL OF COURSE, thats why I am me and you aren't

    From CAIC:
    Kelso Mountain
    December 22, 2005
2 hikers caught, 1 partly buried, 1 buried and killed

Around lunchtime two hikers were caught in a hard slab avalanche on the east side of Kelso Mountain -- a little over 3 miles south of Bakerville and about 1 mile east of the summit of Torreys Peak. One man was buried and killed. Rescuers found the victim later this afternoon under about 5 feet of snow. He was located by a Breckenridge Ski Patrol avalanche dog after a burial of at least 3 hours. Neither man carried avalanche rescue equipment.

The avalanche occurred on an easterly-facing slope above treeline.

We will post more details on Friday, 12/23/2005.

Ran out to the flats. 1-1.5ft crown. Lots of people were riding above treeline on janky shit and we saw only a few with full rescue gear. Scary
Every time I go to Loveland Pass I feel like a Barney because I actually HAVE full rescue gear (especially the other day when I wore the new Avalung that my girlfriend bought me). Most people there hardly even have the athletic skills to get down expert terrain, let alone beacons/shovels/probes. I actually heard a kid ask if what I was wearing under my coat was one of those "homing devices." I couldn't even respond. There is good skiing to be had there, but it's no wonder you can't buy a ride.
    Chocolate? This is doodoo, BABY!
