Here is what the other side is saying on breaking rules.

"I have ventured outside of open runs in the small eastern resort I used to ski. I have received more than one "stern" talking to regarding my actions. I would NEVER do it now that I live out west."

Its good to hear the weatern folks are law abiding citizens and not like the bad ass eastern skiers.

Yeah, us Westerners are far more law-abiding. But you don't have to be, feel free to come out here and duck some ropes.

Once I skied outside the ropes, but was caught by a skipatroller. I was thrown into a dungeon, where I was fisted by 3 bearded nuns for 2 days, without as much as a courtesy lick.

I've learnt my lesson, I will never do it again, I am a good boy now.

Other, less qualified riders may see you or your tracks and decide to do the same thing. If *they* get hurt hitting a rock because, for example, the snow cover wasn't really sufficient to open the run to the public, do you feel any pangs of responsibility?
Holy hell this guy might even be for real. It seems there's a whole forum of people like him over at epicski...

I can't remember a day a DIDN'T duck under a rope. In fact we've gotten very good at the "rope limbo" to the point it can be done at quite high speed - the trick is to give the rope a quick flick at the last moment to avoid it catching on your backpack.

EpicSki dude, if you're not somebody else posting here to generate some flames, welcome to the world of "real" skiing....

Edit: I can't resist to put more epicski quotes...

    Can you say Darwin?

It's generally just stupid to duck the ropes.
Ropes are there for a reason- Don't duck'em.
Seriously, WTF are people thinking these days? I can't believe how many people are ducking the ropes at Alpe this year.
Go check out this forum over there on epicski. It's where the cool people are.

Just to compare these two identical threads - one on TGR, the other on EipcSki, is hilarious...

Wonder how many minutes it would take for epicski to remove my post if I shared the below image. But yet here, it seems to somehow work well for this discussion:

epic is an older crowd thats primarily interested in groomers. They're an OK bunch and are also mad about skiing but in a different way. At least they're not on the couch with slurpees and biggie size fries. Pls no Epic - TGR cross-over threads - its painful to watch

Fair point. Anyway the place I did a season last year was primarily an on-piste kinda place and I came to respect (a little) what they were all about (kind of, when I wasn't laughing at them). On piste is in fact a great place to improve your technique (if there's nothing better to do).

I'd personally like to see an "EpicSki Post of the Week" up at TGR. Kind of like an exchange program between a retirement home and a mental institution.

I like to ski really fast downhill, do a big swooping turn uphill, and see just how far uphill I can go. Drives the other skiers nuts.

A couple years ago we were skiing with a guy from Chamonix at Brighton. And he headed over to a permanently closed area and ducked the rope. We yelled at him to come back as the patrol saw where he was going and was already chasing him down (they were standing right there). We managed to explain to the patroller that he wasn't from around here and in Europe ducking ropes just means you accept responsibility for your own actions and he let him go with a warning after a long explanation of how things are different here.

I haven't skied Europe in 20 years, but as I recall, the relevant differences were numerous -- including the fact that you had to pay for your own medevac. You could buy insurance relatively cheap, though I'm not sure if it covered you off-piste.

Altagirl well said. It gets a little ridiculous over here, when there are two ski patrollers standing chatting next to a huge bright red 20ft wide netting marked with "PISTE FERME!!!" in meter high letters and as you slide around the barrier you nod your head and exchange "ca va?"s.

It was one of my first impressions of skiing in Europe -- if you are endangering others they will stop you (for example if the closed piste is above another open piste) otherwise the rule is "if you don't take our recommendations, don't come complaining when you die." I get to hear about how sue-happy "you Americans" are on a weekly basis whenever the topic comes up.

Isn't it a lot like this in certain places back home too? Like I seem to remember crossing a lot of ropes over at Tahoe without issues... then again that was a long time ago, I was a beginner then, and so didn't do it often enough to tell.

I can can attest to this difference in attitude on the different sides of the pond. I was in Jackson hole a couple of years ago when I was caught cold ducking a rope. A very angry skipatroller made it his personnal duty to embarrass me badly. To make a long story short; I have never taken as much verbal abuse, before or after. Kind of funny when I tried to explain that I was just trying to ski som pow: He wasn't particularly interested in explanations. Strange feeling to be almost 40 years old, looking ashamed down in the snow while I just had to take it.

I like the european attitude better: "If you die, don't say we didn't tell you"

Pfft. you have to do it real limbo style bending backwards from the knees. I've got it to the point where I don't even slow down. I just lay back till the pack touches the tails and watch the rope go past my googles
