    What's your opinion - Isuzu Rodeo 4x4?

I came accross a good deal on a 1992 Isuzu Rodeo 4x4. Anyone own one or have owned one in the past?

    Thanks.

Also known as Honda Passport - Vauxhall Frontera - Opel Frontera.

Junk - of the worst sort - do not touch!

They are built on an early lightweight pickup design. But were intended to do the supermarket run. They are to harsh a ride for the school run and to lightweight a design / unreliable for anything else. The motors are stock car motors and the drive train/running gear is scavanged from all over the place. The european 50 versions had endless recalls - never fixed. Best example I know is the NZ armed forces bought 50 to replace series 3 landrovers and shipped them all to East Timor on UN peacekeeping duties. At the end of 6 months. None were worth reparing anymore, let alone shipping back to NZ. The landrovers they were intended to replace were still going after more than 20 years! - If you want an off roader buy a real one - if you just need a car, buy a car. Not something that tries to be both and does both very badly.

Isuzu Rodeo = worst handling 4x4 that I have ever driven. Never owned one.

If it's free, or near free, take it. Otherwise pass. You can do better in shopping for a midsize SUV.

Well, I'd mostly be running around town and to the ski hill (90% local travel) with the occasional highway trip to SLC, Denver or JH. This just happened to be in my price range and was well kept, but I don't know much about them.

My aunt had a newer one for a long time, but I haven't talked to her about it yet.

    Just curious.

Guess I'll just stick with the Legacy (a.k.a. "The Pussy Wagon") then.

Yeah, but I ski on Pocket Rockets, so does that make me pussy enough to drive a Rodeo?

Have you seen "Brokeback Mountain" more than twice? If yes, then by all means buy a Rodeo.

Ok, say I wasn't ever really going need it to go faster than average highway speeds, but mostly driving around town. Gonna throw skis in it and drive about 70 miles round trip on the weekends. It's a good deal and in good running order. The wife likes it.

Remember, I've been driving a Subaru Justy for a year. I just need a little breathing room. And anything is going to be an increase in power over the Justy.

And I'm not that worried about gas mileage. I don't drive that far in a day. I live in a relatively small Wyoming town.

I owned the same year rodeo and I would STAY AWAY. had major transmission problems, the V6 is horribly underpowered, and the thing just rattled like crazy. I was fortunate enough to find a dealer who gave me pretty good change for it on a trade-in.

The problem is they puke....a lot

So if you don't mind being broke down 30 miles from home you'd probably be okay and would like the vehicle. On the other hand tranys, head gaskets and all that stuff cost a lot to fix and the parts aren't cheap and the used part supply is poor (cause they are all broken).....fyi I am a wholesale car dealer we see a lot of these so I have some foundation for my thoughts.

but is still might be an upgrade on the Justy

I used to have a Trooper the think would never pass inspection something about the frame about to snap in half due to rust. I drove anyway and got pulled over all the time the kool thing was that well the ski pole shifter but I could beat that thing thru the woods and it was monster never got stuck. I sold it to some poor sap for $500 which got me to Kirkwood for a season so I guess it turned out great.

A buddy of mine had one all through HS and through his college years. He beatered the piss out of it and it never died...well until he totaled it. The thing four wheeled reasonably well, but the suspension was soft as hell so it bottomed out constantly and handled for shit. On the curvy WV interstates it was tough keeping it at 65 cause it always felt like it was gonna roll.

Yeah, I decided to pass on the offer, especially after reading all of this. My aunt liked hers alot, but it was a '99, not a '92 (and she bought it new, not used). It was just a good deal, but I'll wait and see if something better comes along....
