Extreme example. I do NOT necessarily intend to huck a 50 ft'er, even in my life. 20 would be great, and 30 would probably be my realistic goal, but I'm not trying to set anything unrealistic for myself. By inspiration, I mean my inspiration to train really hard this summer and fall. The fact that trained people recover from things that untrained people don't (i.e. 50 ft'ers) inspires me to train.
But yes, I do look up to a lot of the maggots as skiers and as people. If that's annoying (and I have tried to realize in the past that it may be), I apologize. But is there anything really wrong with being a (good) role model?

Now I think I was wrong. Not annoying. The apology is from me to you.
Well thank you then.

max, i am not a hucker, and i can tell you that 50 ft is easily doable. (if you have the drive, that is.) you just have to work up to it and find the right snow conditions. hell, if JP can huck 200+, and land on his head with minor injuries, 50 is definitely doable
Oooooh, shit, IT'S DA DELTOID LIGAMENT, BIIIITCH!!!
So I hurt my ankle this day and didn't think too much of it. Put an ace wrap on it, and it was getting better, and then I skied. Now it sucks to do anything without a brace (not necessarily exacerbated by the skiing so much as the lack of the ace wrap for a week).
Saw an ankle/foot doc today and got diagnosed with a deltoid ligament (medial) sprain, which my dad says takes a WHILE to heal (). Got lined up for some PT, and my dad says I should be totally healthy in a couple months (not a couple weeks like I thought, but at least I'm not out for the season).
Bottom line: I should ski/bike as much as I can tolerate. The injury is slowing me down a GOOOOOD bit (I'm getting to be a fat ass from so much time spent on the couch and in the library instead of on the hiking and biking trails and in the gym). Hopefully this will cease by Christmas time, if not Thanksgiving (fingers are crossed). AND hopefully in a stiffer, properly fitting boot (Larry), I'll have even more support than the brace I have on just walking around town.
I'll have to see when the chairs start spinning how much I can do. I fear I won't be able to charge because of not being able to train much in addition to the injury itself, and BC experience yet again will likely not be had in great quantity.
I will NOT be waterskiing any more this fall, so far as I can tell. Sorry, danadog, for your sake and for mine (I had a shit ton of fun, and thanks for letting me come out).
Probability of surgery: minimal to negligible. There is a micronic chance of cartilage damage, says the doc I saw, which would necessitate an MRI and MAYBE surgery if it still hurts in a month. Hoping that's not the case...
Lesson learned: SLOW THE FUCK DOWN, even while water skiing. I have kinda learned that I can/will get hurt doing just about anything. Getting the fuck after it will not be as high a priority this season as I thought (because I will much more than likely get hurt getting after it).
On a positive note, the knee injury from the Mini healed completely within 6 weeks or so, and after a cortizone shot, the ankle injury from the same incident (eventually my chief complaint) healed completely as well.
Shit, I get hurt a lot...
[/diary entry]
Edit: heh... reading Yoss's comments and some others about training super hard remind me of a catch 22--have to train in order to avoid injury and to recover from injury, but have to avoid injury and recover from injury in order to train...

Ok. So I saw the physical therapist, who did a pretty in-depth analysis to try to figure out exactly what happened to my ankle. The verdict is that I most likely sprained some of the ligamentous tissue in addition to doing what's causing most of my problems, which is bruising the anterior and posterior articular surface between the tibia and talus. Which means that if it was bad, it could take up to 6 months to go away.
The good news is that this means I should just stop being such a pussy and should put up with the pain. Irritating it will make it take longer to heal, but it won't make it any worse. So I can either sit around and do nothing and be comfortable, or I can go out and ski and just raise my pain tolerance. No brainer, yes?
My parents are coming this weekend. Hydrocodone for the season, please, fatherman?
I'm again stoked to ski, although just putting my foot in a ski boot makes my ankle ache.

Just a fun Friday bump...
Found out today I tore my lateral meniscus. Surgery coming, probably at the end of the summer. Bike season may be kinda limited.
Fuck.
PSA: A-basin is ROCKY. Do not land on one of the rocks. It will hurt. (Although it wasn't the impact or the slight tuck-and-roll that hurt; it was pulling on the knee while stretching the next day when I felt the pop...)
