Is it true? Is there a search? Where were they last seen? Details?

Missing Skiers Found in Powder Mountain
Two missing skiers were found and are "in great shape".

That's what Lieutenant Jeff Malan with the Weber County Sheriff's office says.

Richard Fitch and Elizabeth Whitehouse were spotted by a Utah Highway Patrol chopper around nine-thirty this morning. The San Diego couple was hoisted out of a canyon near Powder Mountain, where they spent the night.

Fitch and Whitehouse were reported missing around six last night. Search teams scoured the area looking for them until late last night and started again this morning.

Lieutenant Malan says the pair in their 60s had on the proper gear to battle the blizzard-like weather that moved in yesterday.

The two were checked out at the command center for injuries, but did not require any treatment.

So Truth, what happened in BCC on Saturday afternoon? Woodsy, Twoplanker and I were heading down at around 3:30 and saw a command post set up there too. Saw tons of peps heading into BC in the AM.

    Know anything bout dat??

Storm Slows Rescue Efforts in Big Cottonwood Canyon
    Dec. 20, 2003

Today's storm took its toll on rescuers as they tried to rescue a tubing accident victim out of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The Jong was part of a group of people who snowshoed up to the ridgeline between Millcreek and Big Cottonwood Canyons to go tubing.

He apparently couldn't make a turn and ended up hitting a tree.

Someone else in the group called for help and a sheep suit.

But the weather hampered rescuers efforts.

Sgt. Lane Larkin Salt Lake Co. Sheriff's Dept: "IT WAS VERY CHALLENGING WITH THE WEATHER WE WERE HOPING... IT WAS A BIT CHALLENGE FOR THE TEAM."

It took close to four hours for crews to bring the victim out.

They say hesuffered a head injury and some external injuries (a strange harness and phallic device was also found at the scene)... but as soon as they started warming him up and giving him Nitrous Oxide his condition started to improve and he identified himself as BobMc.

Yeah, was up there this AM when they were found. Guess they kept moving all night instead of digging a pit. That kept it interesting for searchers. They were on the backside of Cobabe Canyon, how the heck they got over there I'n not sure, but some of the employees said the pair had been there before and they recognized them. Fog, dementia, who knows...but luckily they are alive. PowMow, where you enter, but you can never leave. Nice night to spend above Eden. Glad they made it out.

Dissapointing accumulation up there today. Few laps on PAradise and a couple shots off Lightening Ridge...needed a few more inches. Great if you came from San Diego or Virginia. I was home by 1PM. Definate bottom to it.

Surprised the packs of search and rescue sleds didn't plow someone in the resort...guess nobody told them that 50+mph up cat roads around blind corners with descendeing skiers is a bad idea. Looked more like a sled rally rather than a search effort....guess they were done by then.

Man, you guys are fast - I just got back from Pow Mow covering this story..

(hey Lumpy, did you see us in the chopper hovering overhead?, next time, wave, and we'll give you a lift to the illegal peak of your choice)

It was a total sled-fest as far as search and rescue is concerned.

I talked to the couple they rescued down at their condo in Wolf Creek Village, they're fine, sleeping the day away. Amazing thing is, they spent the whole night moving to keep warm, but the husband thought they could ski out - turns out they were one more canyon over than he thought, so yes, they could have skiied out, but it would have been to Wellsville/Hyrum, about 30 miles.

For you Pow Mow locals, Woody is my hero. We rolled up, he pulls up, and says "Steve, follow me, they're up here", and takes me to them...great guy, treat him well....

Something like this could never happen to Endless - cause he'd whip out that PDA and PM the board for a rescue.

A rescue which would probably take place after a maggot betting pool on how far he was from the boundary line was created.

    Spooky...

That actually happened to me, although I was 11 or 12 or so. Christmas day, got a new sled. My cousins and I headed to the hill behind my grandparents house. Next thing I know I wake up back at Grandma's house. According to my cousins it was a spectacular crash into a tree, I remember none of it. They towed me unconcious on a sled back. My dad kept telling my Mom I'd be ok. After my shoulder grew a softball sized lump he finally relented and suggested I go to the hospital.

The damage ended up being one broken collarbone. I spent the next six weeks in some sort of strap type torture device. I could only wear button up shirts, great fun for a child. Even today I can reach about an inch higher with one arm than the other.

I think its just for Woody's off days. He's a machine, but a man needs a day of rest now and then.
