Report from Mt Rose (base elevation 8200') today, 12.23.05:

It sucks. It obviously rained all the way to the top of the lifts (10,000'), since everything is a sheet of ice.

I slid down 1 run and went home.

Maybe it'll be classic spring skiiing this weekend: you have to wait until about 10am for things to soften up on the East Bowl and 11am on the Rose side.

I shudder to imagine what Squaw is like if Rose is icy! Hmmm.....

or maybe this ice cube ?

I'm taking one for the team and going on a surf trip to the mystical Ranch next week. Then, MAYBE, then you'll get some pow.

firm to quite firm. but by 11 or so things were getting softer. but only select spots. the funnel was fun. granite was questionable.

HAVE UPPED POPS AND LOWERED SNOW LEVELS WITH THE AFTERNOON PACKAGE FOR THE SUNDAY/MONDAY SYSTEMS. RIDGE TO SHIFT EAST SAT NIGHT AND INTO SUNDAY AS THE FIRST OF A COUPLE DISTURBANCES MOVE TOWARD THE FORECAST AREA. PRECIP COULD MOVE INTO THE SIERRA AS EARLY AS SUNDAY MORNING WITH THE FIRST WAVE. MODELS AND ENSEMBLES CONSISTENT WITH THIS SCENARIO SO CONFIDENCE IS FAIRLY GOOD. SNOW LEVELS WILL BEGIN NEAR 10,000 FEET BEFORE LOWERING TO NEAR 7500 FEET BY MID-DAY SUNDAY. QPF AMOUNTS SUNDAY LOOK TO BE FAIRLY LIGHT COMPARED TO THE PAST FEW SYSTEMS AND WILL MAINLY FALL WEST OF THE SIERRA CREST. A MORE ORGANIZED WAVE WILL QUICKLY FOLLOW SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY AND WILL HAVE A MORE TYPICAL COLD FRONT MOVE THROUGH THE FORECAST AREA. SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO LOWER CONSIDERABLY MONDAY MORNING TO NEAR 5000 FEET NORTH TO 6500 FEET SOUTH. THIS SHOULD BRING A DECENT SHOT OF SNOW TO ALL ELEVATIONS OF THE SIERRA WITH SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF 1-2 FEET ABOVE 7000 FEET.

no way in hell this happens.

At Alpine today. it was very firm for the first hour. Race skis would have been nice. Spring conditions by noon.

the snow pack on the lower mtn took serious damage from the rain. Some creeks are showing through on red trail, blue trail and at the bottom of Alpine bowl. Bunch of brown spots and places the run off carved a groove in the snow and ground. Several of these were 30-40 yards long.

Top of Alpine Bowl/Sun Spot looked just a little thinner than it did on Tuesday.

Meadow was still functional for skiing with the kids.

I took some pic and will try to post them later.

I don't think it has been pointed out already, but it seems obvious to me that this is all Basom's fault. He is the one that agonized over the decision to move there for months on end for fuck's sake. If he hadn't thought about it so much or moved somewhere else, you and everyone else would all would be nip deep in blower siz.

I also hold him personally responsible for the Red Sox not having a center fielder, first baseman, shortstop, or GM right now. If he had not left Boston and kept agonizing over WEEI every day and occasionally calling in, none of this would have happened.

    That is all.

There were moments I wished I was on my LPs in the 1st hour. But, I didn't want to put them at risk w/out knowing how thin things had gotten.

I think I will be going with the 2 ski option tomorrow (6*/XXX).

Oh cool! I'm going between the 27th and 31st, depending on swell (boating in). I've got a black wettie and a white board. Look for me

    Pic from Alpine 12/23

Alpine lower mtn is looking pretty bad. I thought I would put some pic as an FYI. It is going to take a
large amount of snow to cover some of these hazards.

Plus like any parent I'm going to show off some pics of
my 3 yr old having fun regardless of conditions.

The snow pics were all take just after 2pm 12/23. The light was not the best.

    Blue Trail Creek.

    Face

From Summit looking at Scott. Those bushes are about 3.5' out of the snow.

    Wolverine No Go.

    Nasty Spot on Weasel

    Not so promising

But fun was had. My wife and I actually got to ski together. Always good.

My three yr old had a blast.

    With her new skis:

Getting Ready: (bottom of Promise Land in background. Look at snow )

Checking Flat light performance of goggles:

LuvBug handle spring crud no prob: (again, Bottom of Promise Land in background)

Having fun in the lodge with friend:

Very cute, StormDay. I'd swear the tips of those Luv Bugs are as wide as her face.

It's very sad to see the damage, though. Wolverine was skiing pretty sweet last Saturday. That was then; this is now.

Good day today at KW, had to look around, but there was definitely some good stuff to be found. Absolutely bluebird, and/but spring-like for sure. My best day of the year... (my only other day being yesterday in pouring fucking rain, though, I still enjoyed every minute of it).

And, yeah, my $12 Explosivs rule .

Hey La Chupacrybaby - I went up in the afternoon and it was decently fun - it softened up in spots - 9 or 10 laps of nice fun bumps in under 2 hours is not a bad way to get some exercise after work!! I did have an under the lift high speed prerelease almost hit a rock head first on about my fourth turn of the day....friggin Salomons ...I have a nice little raspberry on my chin for Christmas now...

...it's even a little warmer up there today so I'm going back up today after the Giants-Skins game for some afternoon corn!!

Can't wait for this coming week though...

    HEAVENLY Sat 12/24

I got to Heavenly around noon and skied until 3:45pm on my Legend Pros. They were great for the firm stuff but in the tight bumps....whew.

It was very firm all over with some man-made granular slush in lower areas and sun exposed regions. Off piste tree terrain was bullet proof ice: like a bad day of Eastern boiler plate non-stop all the way. Quite awful.

I have to work Xmas day but I'll be at Rose or less likely Squaw on Monday.

....currently wrapping xmas presents, streaming dnb, and drinking scotch.....in a place that even the Pineapple Bullet Train can reach....

    Suburbs of Chicago

I guess it hasn't been above freezing here in about a month, but yesterday, when we landed, the temp was in the 40's....today in the upper 40's. I'm here for another couple days and may hit up a local hill or two...but I have a feeling Hawaii's wicked witch is even bringing the midwest an early xmas present.

The rest of my family rolled to the "H", where Shugs and Pimpin' Frog took only a couple runs and went home to play some Call of Duty 2.... oh the holidays
