there will be wet snow to ski on.
if you like to ski and like to drive, then it could be well worth it.
bring water skis.

took 2 runs off powderbowl and 1 face run at the heave and deemed it not worthy of missing more then an hour of work so i bailed. might go back for another few runs tomorrow if they open the top. track is punched on waterhouse proper but don't know about powderhouse and the 2ndhand word is that the top half is pretty good and the lower half downright sucks. prolly check out powderhouse pre-work wednesday for the exercise if nothing else.
my bud w/ the waterhouse report also said shit was whoomping and cracking all over the place so be afraid.
Yeah, Lego and I went to Sugarbowl on Sunday, and it was exciting to finally ski while it was "snowing", but once we went into a steeper tree section, it was deep and extremely heavy. I couldn't ski this crap worth shit, so we left after an hour and a half. Too bad, I should have stayed longer to actually learn how to ski the deep wet shit, but it wasn't fun for me and I was getting tired of seeing Lego waiting for me at the end of the runs - he recovering from an ACL tear and all.....![]()
i pray conditions improve by next week, might be my only week in the sierras this year.![]()
2nd the "deep wet shit" comment at Sugar Bowl sunday. There were some decent stashes to be had in little steep tree pockets off the Judah lift, wind deposited stuff. Prolly all rained on by nowOriginally Posted by divegirl

was at kirkwood sunday evening and a lot of the snow dumped from the weekend got awful soggy due to the warm weather. snow-forecast also shows the snow level increasing throughout the week. bad news.
Well, it wasn't powder, but Kirkwood was surprisingly good today.
AKA dragged my ass out there, I really had no interest in skiing frozen mashed potatoes, but, as it turns out, we didn't have to.
First run, as always, was oops where the snow had become chalky goodness. Hit some east facing trees and found a soft corn like material. I reported this find to AKA and we hit an east facing ridge in Palisades that was smooth and fast corn, huh, that was good. We repeated that run and then headed out past the boundaries to another completely untracked east facing ridge and scored some really good corn.
Finished off the day by hiking vista for some west facing snow. On the way out we had some beautiful chalky turns on The Wall. Vista was a combination of wind deposited soft stuff, corn and some slightly crusty glazed over snow, that was easy to break through. It was fast and smooth.
Yup, definitely a good day at the wood.
Back at AM today. Had to take 3 yr old skiing. She only cares that the Meadow chair is running.
Good News: she had fun.
Bad news: Top of Alpine got very warm. It looked like everything below 8000 got significant amount of rain last night. Snow was very hard first thing this morning. The stuff in the Sun soften up by 11.
Keyhole/lower Saddle did open today. All other hikes were closed.
It's going to be rock hard below any new snow we get. If the wind forecast holds (80+mph), I'm probably not skiing tomorrow
FKNA....I won't be skiing until the 30th, but damn, with you guys giving run by run updates, I won't miss anything.....THANKS

not counting days 2016-17
I have been on new skis the last two days. Just need to be a little careful and stay on groomers below the top of Roundhouse.Originally Posted by alpinedad

So, went to bed at 10pm sunday fighting off thoughts of 3ft of pow in order to get some sleep and wake up at 4:15. Booked it to Kirkwood, started to get nervous when the was no snow on the trees at 8000. came to find that it had rained all over my dreams.
I think I missed the spats more than if it was 3 feet of blower. I skied my new 184 foils which were suprisingly fun and good on the weird snow. Had fun, drove to truckee hoping the storms would cool off, spent the night. decided it wasn't looking good and drove home because I hadn't seen my parents since I got home from school. Still hoping the storms get cold and friday is killer at kirkwood, and I will have my spats.
Go Sharks.
As of 8:30am it was 45 degrees and raining in SLT at 6500 feet.
FKNA!!! Here we go again. At least with this storm it is supposed to get colder ass the storm progresses.
OK, It's Official: THIS FUCKING SUCKS.
Do I have everyone's permission to nuke this thread (that I started in anticipation of a big snow week) in the hopes that any bad ju ju will be gone?
but, just maybe, next week may bring the goods....
TRENDING TOWARD ZERO THE LAST WEEK OF THE YEAR...... GOOD NEWS FOR GETTING COLDER SYSTEMS INTO THE MAMMOTH AREA......HIGH WATER CONTENT SYSTEMS LIKELY TO CONTINUE UNTIL PNA PHASE FLIPS.....NEXT SYSTEM COMING IN STRONGER WITH LESS RIDGING MONDAY INTO THE NIGHT.....COLDER....DRIER SNOW.....COULD BE A 1 TO 2 FOOTER.....JUST IN TIME FOR THE TRAVELERS......TAKE YOUR CHAINS MONDAY/NIGHT!!! SNOW LEVELS WILL BE A FALLIN.....I SEE ANOTHER STORM POSSIBLE LATER IN THE WEEK...WHAT A WAY TO START THE NEW YEAR!!!!
Nah, leave it up, once we get the good stuff, WHICH WILL HAPPEN, we will flood the board with epic TR's. No excuses, we will post pics/videos whatever.
BTW, it was raining on Luther Pass at 9:15 am at 7,700 feet.
Well, that's good news. Why do I feel like drinking Kona coffee?BTW, it was raining on Luther Pass at 9:15 am at 7,700 feet.
Anyway, I guess I should post this from the NWS:
SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO
REMAIN GENERALLY ABOVE PASS LEVELS OR ABOVE 7000 FEET BUT MAY
OCCASIONALLY DROP BRIEFLY TO PASS LEVEL AT TIMES BETWEEN TODAY AND
THURSDAY. ABOVE THE 8000 FOOT LEVEL...AS MUCH AS ONE TO TWO FEET
OF NEW SNOW IS POSSIBLE BETWEEN TODAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT.
