there must be some sort of 'mt rose effect' as the snow level being reported everywhere else says that the snow level has remained around 8,000 ft.

kirkwood is reporting an inch or two at the base (ie slush) and a foot at the top (ie sierra cement). Meaning: it is gonna suck.

All upper lifts are currently on hold.

PS I say we let this thread continue to grow until this weather pattern/snow levels change.

    AAAARRRRGHH!

That does it. I'm convinced. This thread is poison.

20 minutes ago Rose reported 30-40", everything open, moderate winds.
They just updated it to everything CLOSED, avalanche control work today.

DELETE THIS THREAD! IT IS CURSED!!!!!

Homewood too? Jesus Christ on a motorbike.

Oh, and Jim, regarding that 80 closure? I was heading to Reno from Squaw last night and hit traffic about 30 miles from the airport, took me 1.5 hours to go less than 2 miles, then had to come back on the Mt. Rose. It was fucking nuking up there, well below 7000 ft. Total drive time, Truckee-Reno-Truckee: 4 + hours.

Looks like snow at the base of Kirkwood. But just took the dog out and it is slushing instantly turning into jacket soaking the moment it hits you. Two cars that were parked out front sometime overnite have a couple of inches accumulation on them.

Windy too. No lifts are turning and there are no lifties out doing their thing yet.

Rune - great shots. we'll have to get together with my 4 year old one day.

    Flooding at Kirkwood

    (Tim L. is that you?)

We are sitting in the Kirkwood valley and watching it dump heavy rain and slush. We drove down to the local bar last night and the streets were flooded. It's so heavy and wet. Sucks. Good day to read a book. Hoping for cold air.

Here's a pic of our 16 mo old braving the slush a couple days ago.

Almost forgot. Downtown Carson City was flooded last night. I'm sure it's worse today. The center divider was completely covered in front of the capital building and several local businesses had wisely sandbagged their doors. A couple hadn't and will probably find a nice surprise this morning. Also, about 2-3 miles of 395 through downtown had cones out closing one of the two southbound lanes. It's nutso out there.

This may be common knowledge, but my roommate was trying to get a friend from RTI, and here is what we have learned.

I-80 at Floriston (right near NV state line) is closed both ways due to huge mud slides. They are claiming it may be closed for 48 hours. Then we looked into the Rose option, and it is closed to due to multiple commercial vehicles crashing.

Looks like there is no getting from Reno to Tahoe.

My house is truckee is getting pounded by rain (9:40 AM).....friggin nasty.

    Cold Air....please cold air.......PLEASE>>>>>>

Is it true what NOAA claims that snow levels now have dropped to 5500ft?

Thanks for the comments btw lph and lou. We had a great day. Yes Lou, we should get the kids together.

just so there is no confusion...... you could always go south to spooner summit and then go to truckee, it would be a long trip, but there are certainly options. (i know you know this Huck, just wanted to point it out).

(also, i have it on good authority that the temp should drop at least 20 degrees today, as Arty intends on making the ULTIMATE sacrifice and send in his beacon for upgrades)

This is strange, the Reno weatherman just read an update from the national weather service that said sometime around 12pm its gonna start snowing in reno. However he also said that around Tahoe the snow level isnt going to make it down to the lake. According to the weather man the cold air is gonna slide down the east side of the sierra, awesome.

this is awesome. i love rain. i would like nothing more then for it to keep raining at biblical proportions. hooray for rain. whoooopeeeeee!!!!!

a friend working at sierra just called and said they are open and there's prolly 10 people total out there skiing right now. snow levels are dropping by the minute so hopefully we're turning the corner and chain control on kingsbury is always good to see. at least there's some football on today.

This is some scary shit....why didn't I buy flood insurance ....100-500 yr zone my ass....the waterway behind the houses across the street went from 20 ft across to about 500ft across and only has maybe 2 more feet to crest the banks......so I'm sitting here...watching...worrying...water levels are supposed to peak here in a few hours...ugh...

on a brighter note here's a pick from the base of Mt Rose...throw some lighter snow on top open the roads and tomorrow could be the day of the year....

    river in the street

Here's a pic of the river flowing in the streets of Kirkwood.

And those wind warnings are for really. SUPER gusty. Debris everywhere. No skiing today, I'm afraid.
