Double whatever the SLC-Tahoe time estimate is, if the weather stays nasty. I was "plowing" 7 inches of fresh the whole 160 miles to reno this morning on I-80

It like being stuck in an Asian whorehouse at the base of a great peak you're going to ski.
You don't know if you need to get out of bed or if it's just a dream.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

As for skiing, who knows. It could get cold tonight and turn to blower by morning. My bet is it's gonna be heavy manana. Don't get me wrong, it should still be awesome. However, don't expect Asian whores to greet your nipples at the top of the lift.

At least that's what I'll be telling myself while I'm sitting behind my desk tomorrow.

went to bed at 11 last night and was still raining, woke up at 3am, still raining, called snow phone @ 6:30am, "mixed conditions" (e.g. rain) = stoke killed, mission aborted.

THIS SUCKS....I hope I was way off and that the snow up top today was great, but I dobut it. All we can do now is hope that this next sytem comes in colder, but this one right now is pegged to be a warm one as well.

I also decided against it at 7am--"mixed conditions," 60+mph winds and 37 at the base of Alpine didn't sound good at all.

    at squaw

Bud on patrol at squaw called us this morning, said snow quality was shitty at the top of the slot. Maybe better higher up.

Yesterday (not sure when) gusts on top of palisades reached 132 mph. Upper still closed today b/c of winds.

Still raining here in the valley.

Heavy, heavy shit at Sierra yesterday (Sunday). Even some 'boarders walking down.

Waving legs sticking up in the air, people trying to get out, all over the place

Hope you're gear is really waterproof too. Exceptionally wettening (?)

Way too easy to "submarine". Even those fat-boys.
Lean back, and straightline that fucker. All you need is a speedboat to pull ya
    Hard on the legs (duh)
Had 2 good runs late. Down "Castle". Wind had packed it in, and blown fine stuff on top, up high. Lovely after the cement
Then the usual, bumps, pow, cement, firm, cut-up, you name it, all kind of stuff.

When I decided to risk the trees (Castle/Preachers), they were good. Loads of "wind sculpture" to get air off. A few rocks, hiding under drop-off's, but I missed 'em
Cindy hated the entire day. When she wasn't swearing, she was crying What you gonna do ?

    Alpine 12/19

Went to AM today. I ski until 12:30. Top of the mtn was carvable sierra cement. Snow got really nasty at the top Round house and on the Face.

I traversed in to High Yellow gully. Got two good turns before the snow turned really really nasty.

The snow was ok in Alpine bowl, Wolverine and in the D’s, below that it was best to ski down on the groomers.

No hikes were open today and it was not raining on the snow this morning. If the hikes open tomorrow, stuff like the top of Beaver will be ok if you have big skis. The ski out from Beaver will probably really suck.

I’ll be back at AM tomorrow. Hopefully, take advantage of the nicer weather and get the 3 yr old out on Meadow. 1st hour I’ll be on summit. Blue jacket and LPs.

Last night I couldn't help but notice the nearly tropical breeze that was blowing the rain through the Bay Area.

    Please cool off.... please................

props for getting out today. like i said earlier, when the rain didn't let up all night, just figured it wasn't worth it this morning. best we can do now is hope that this next system acts more like a typical Tahoe storm: comes in warm w/high snow levels, then cold front sweeps in behind and lowers snow levels and deposits some nice fresh on top of the mank to ski. This is what NWS is calling for as of now, so cross your fingers.

Rose was good today. Not the feet of powder I expected but not the Sierra cement I feared. Magnum lift open/closed several times due to wind. Chutes should open this week.

I made some turns with Corky. That man is solid and can haul butt! He was on the Leg Pros and I was on my Vicious.

I'll ski Wed afternoon, Saturday, (work Xmas), and ski Monday the 26th: Rose and Squaw.

It wasnt all that bad at the wood. It was mashed spuds but totally skiable and really good in some spots, of course in other spots it was really horrible.

OOps was good. Dan cliffs was good. Lower cirque was really good.

Waterfall was the least fun Ive ever had on skis 1/4" crust on the spuds.

Even Kirkwood was not spared. Avy control continued through the morning. Turns were made on lift 5 until almost 10:00 when 6 (Cornice) opened. The wall opened just before noon. Wet sloppy sierra cement with avy chunks the size of trucks. Left at 2:00 with darkening wet skies, warm temps. If this stuff freezes, bring the ice skates.

Why was Carson Spur closed yesterday...look at all the lines that ran:

The wait for chairs to open. First ride on 5 at 9:30, 6 didn't open until 10:00. Lots of explosions above the wall and backside were heard all morning and into the early afternoon.

    Waiting at 9:50

Once on top, you had to dodge these snow boulders. Huge crown lines under Sentinel, and the entire wall was avy debris later in the day.

Even skiing off the cornice, there was no sinkage:

Cirquerider, Thanks for keeping us posted....much appreciated for those pics.

    Like hop said earlier:

For the first night in a long while, we had to open our windows to keep cool. That and the smell of pineapple made me think that it wasn't looking good for the snow levels.

Thanks for the Kirkwood updates!! Today was QUITE different than yesterday at Mt Rose ...not horrible though...I got a few hours of good turns in and some exercise hiking over from the lakeside lift....

34 in the parking lot, light misty drizzle down low and needlelike sleet up high...it seemed the "snow level" hovered in the high 8's all day...there were pockets of good windbuff here and there up high and down low the untracked stuff was fun....

...then the wind picked up, the sleet turned into buckshot and lifts started closing!!

Jim, it was nice making turns with you ...and your boys seem like two cool kids....let me know when your getting up there again - I'm thinking Thurs or Fri for me...

ok... i think we can blame my family for this. normally i've been blowing out of Tahoe for Christmas to go to Maui to visit my parents and my sister's family. This year, my sister's family came to Truckee and arrived this past Saturday.... just a few hours before this past storm started. my parents arrive tonight, so that might not be helping. of course the in-laws arrive from Boston this Friday, so maybe they will bring the cold air.

whatever... we need COLD air NOW!

Thanks for the up date everyone. I couldn't even bring myself to get out today even though I made the trip up last night. I don't think Squaw opened the upper mountain all day. Things could be good up high Tue. at Squaw?? Does anyone have any info?

gold coast was running at squaw today. as well as later yesterday.

the water content of the snow was around 75% if you want to get down to science. the 9000 ft. snow levels last night manked it good. it was slow and sticky even with warm temp wax on the spats. its just too flat up there. the groomers were fun and soft and flat. did two laps, and then did some racing with the crew on mtn run. i totally won. tomarrow looks like more rain.

i might go to mt. rose and see what happened there tomarrow.
