i learned how to drive in a '76 peugot 504. little brown manual diesel. i drove it around in circles in our backyard (lived on a farm in Ohio) when i was 14. my stepdad figured it didn't really have enough go to get me in too much trouble, and he was pretty much right -- though i did come pretty close to sticking it in the swamp a couple times.
had an extra gas tank in the trunk, the thing would go around 1000 miles between filling stations. reliable, too -- the engine anyways. it had some electrical problems, though the final killer was that the whole brake system needed to be replaced and we just didn't have the motivation to put that kind of time into her.
it was kind of a neat looking little car....ugly as hell...but with a retro cool thing goin on.
My parents had a 504 that gave them all kinds of trouble. They finally gave up on it when a cat stole and hid the keys while they were on vacation; they abandoned the car, bought a '78 Chevy Impala wagon, and drove home.
Put that on your website, Peugeot lovers.
A cat stole their keys? As in a furry little animal? Thats quite the story.Originally Posted by Steven S. Dallas

Honest to God. And to make it better, do you know who that cat grew up to be? Former vice-presidential candidate Admiral Jim Stockdale.
True story.
Thanks for ruining the mental image of a cougar 3-some with hot young parents.Originally Posted by Steven S. Dallas

Simple reliable old beasts. Much bigger than a VW. The statin waggon was a true 8 seater. They continued to be made in many parts of the world until at least the late 80's when france gave up making its sucsessor the 505 and these plants finaly got that tooling instead. Lots around in North Africa and I belive other parts of the world with french influence. Never a fast car but a great load lugger. The diesel is very slow but if maintained should last almost indefinetly due to it's simplicity and over engineering. Would be a good alternative if you are buying in the third world but not as capable as Cruiser / rover. The Landrover at least has a great many interchangable parts between decades. Most parts can be made to function between a series 1 and series 3 - that gives you almost 40 years of compatble bits.
