So every time I check the surf report for Hawaii on Wetsand.com/swellwatch. I see the tip of the Aleutian Islands. And they look like they get battered with gigantic surf every week. They get hit by way more big red storms then any other island chain I've ever seen. Has anyone ever explored that area before? Has it ever been featured in any surf vid? I'm sure its cold as balls but if those islands have any reef at all thats prob a big wave mecca
generally no reefs per say. mostly volcano type features, straight up out of the h20. have seen great surf around Kodiak, but never anything out further, although i imagine there are a few features here and there that would pay off. h20 is cold, but people surf up here all the time i.e PWS, Sitka, Kodiak, Yakutat, Cook Inlet bore tide, etc.
also my general experience at sea in the Aleutians has been confused angry seas, not nice sets at all, but that was always out a ways, don't know how it shapes up near shore.
I did some surfing off of Unalaska Island near the town of Dutch Harbor. that was 3 years ago while I was out there for work.
we jsut found some bays that got really shallow really quick and went at it during a storm. the bay protected us from the weather, and the waves came in pretty nice...
I'm not the greatest surfer (I live in AK) but it was a blast. definitely had to don the THICK wetsuit, even in the summer...
ADN.com is running a great story series on the Selendang Ayu wreck last year (which happened out in the Aleutians near Dutch) - its not the greatest surfing Beta but its a great read (front page - adn.com)...I still think you would die.
I saw an insane right pt.break on the south side of Akutan Is. when I was working there about 20 yrs. ago.Only saw it once but it looked very rideable.I crabbed fish for 2 yrs. there and always wondered about the other islands. We rarely fished close enough to the islands to check out the surf but I'm sure there are surfable spots out there somewhere.
there's probably a few breaks here and there and some people have surfed on various islands at different times, it pricey getting out there, the weather is crap and getting around is difficult. You only need a 6/4, and the key as always is timing, because if it's big it's almost always blowing hard and messy.....but dream on if you wish
