so what is all this stuff about skis having slightly turned up tails, almost like 1/3twintip? (ex: volkl mantras)
is there any performance value for this? why cant companies just decide to make the ski either a twin tip or a flat-tailed?

Their problem might be indecisiveness.
But, then again, it might not be.

My opinion is that turned up tails on big mtn skis are the way to go.
I generally like the longest skis I can get. They don't kill surface area like a full twin does. In a perfect world i like a flat tail, but the turn up is useful for backing out of tight situations and the occasion switchyness.
Drive slow, homie.
I find that a turned up tail makes it a lot easier to dump speed after a huck or straightline or something.
For the vast majority, kicked tails are pure marketing.
vapor lock - bitch.
Really? I think flat tails are better for that type of stuff.....Originally Posted by Samwich

Little tails are gold.
But as the size of the tail grows the drawbacks begin to appear.
For example Gotama begins to be really fucking annoying thing to ski when you start to get windpack/crust on the top layers.
When turning, the uphill skis tail will dig really hard into the snow, cutting speed and throwing off balance. A big boo-yah.
In spring snow and powder you dont even notice the effect, but when the snow gets funky, the got´s start to suck.
I havent noticed the same effect on more "even" tails, say, Pockets, SPs or Maidens.
The floggings will continue until morale improves.
