Not really a fan of Patron. I think its a bit more marketing than anything.

We have an amazing liquor store near us with none of the "standard" brands and everything is great value.

El Amo is my current budget sipping tequila. $25 and its reeaally good.

I will 2nd the suggestions for Porfidio and Chinaco. Both excellent.

Both of the super duper El Tesoro and Cuervo familia are amazing, but a bit tooo expensive. this El Amo is really damn good. Highly recommended.

yes, this is quite good, and quite cheap by most standards, but hard to find. Last I saw it was in CO. for 26 bucks.

Hey Irul, chill. I'll go toe to toe with you on margarita mixing. sugar? syrup? pfft.

I tried Corzo (the silver) recently and it was nice... pretty mild. Tequila is not usually my drink.

Yeh, I'm with you on the Triple Sec.
    Grand Marnier is too strong
I sometime like to have a couple of margi's. I'm not fond of getting wasted on one drink
We buy the Supermarket brand of T-sec as it's usually only 15% proof.

No, it's not. your palate just isn't refined enough. You quote a single malt Scotch as your drink of choice. Single malts are considered by many to be the best in Scotch 100% Blue Agave is to many in tequila. I understand that you may not like it, but that doesn't make it shit. I dislike Cognac, but Hundreds of years, and hundreds of dollars for the better bottles, can't all be wrong.

Oh, it's simply "Oban," by the way... It's from Scotland, not Ireland. If you're gonna spray better get the name right.

whatever you do, don't buy "Tortilla" Tequila.

I thought I was getting a great deal at $9/handle, but goddamn, I get a headache just thinking about it. The price and the fact that it said "autentico" on it should have been enough to steer me away from it, buuut.....

Anyone have a chance to get Chamucos Reposado Especial I suggest trying it. This stuff goes down smoother than Patron could ever hope to. Have not found it in the local liquor store but in Mexico the bottle goes for about $20, mail order in the U.S. $45-$50.

    to kill ya

one of my favorite tequilas is milagro. smooth smelling and tasting, almost buttery. comes in a nice bottle, with an etched agave inside. (inside/out, maybe). cabo wabo reposado, don julio anejo and patron anejo are my other favorites. stay away from the cuervo, 1800 or otherwise.

The cat, or deer in this case, was out of the bag ages ago. You used to be able to get Cazadores for $15 a bottle. Now it's in the high 20s/low 30s. They even sell an anejo now.

Doh! I knew I was forgetting one. The bottle you're talking about is the Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo. It's different from the normal anejo and it's super yummy.

Also, the Cuevo 1800 Anejo isn't too shabby.

Any cheap tequila and a excellent cut of beef. Marinate overnight and grill. Awesome!

I like Patron or Cabo for shooting silvers at the pubs. Patron is smoother, cabo stronger. I think 1800 is perfectly good for shooting as well. For me its smoother than Cabo.

For sipping Anejo's I am a student, still learning, and forgetting. I've had Herradura, Cabo, Patron, don julio. I think I like the Huerro the best. So very tasty and smooth.

    Great thread, great suggestions.

    SORRY FOR SHOUTING.
Just a splash of GM improves the relative low-grade of most triple secs, not including Cointreau, which I happen to agree is awesome. And with the sweetness of triple sec and Rose`s lime, I would not put sugar or syrup in a Margharita, wherevever you got that one. Of course if you requested yours that way, I`d oblige w/o the sopmoric insult.

BTW, watch who you call a gaper. Perhaps my backcountry log contains more days and vert than yours ever will Shout not needed...

Thanks for the recommendation. I just bought a bottle and it tastes smoooooth. It should go great with DTM's chile recipe that I will recreate this weekend.

Ditto that. Herradura Añejo is so smooth its almost like a Cognac.
I've spent way too much time working in Mexico where it's customary to sip fine tequila after a meal. And, thanks to the "quien es mas macho" mentality it always escalates to the best bottle in the house so I've tasted a quite a few ... even home made stuff out of a milk jug.
Other favorites are Perfidio & Patrón, and I'm partial to Añejos ...

I purchased a bottle of Chinaco Anejo this last week and tonight I have been sipping it a little bit. Very strong flavor, definetely gives you that cognac flavor with the a strong but smooth finish of a fine anejo. Thumbs up. Very good.

I've been looking for a bottle of the Cuervo Familia Reserve for a while now. Too many people seem to hail this as amazing.

It really is the shit. When I first tried it I hadn't really acquired a taste for booze in general and didn't really like it. Now that I've been drinking for a while, I'm stunned by it. It so good it even competes with some of the finest scotches. Not that it tastes like scotch, but it's complexity and smooveness is amazing. It's definitely worth the price of the bottle. Around $80 the last time I checked. It's amazing that something that good can come from a company that makes something so shitty. Cuervo Gold is absolute fucking garbage. I'd rather pound a bottle of Jaeger, and I fucking hate Jaeger.

That said, Herradura Anejo is pretty fucking good too. One of these days I'm gonna pony up for the Herradura Seleccion Suprema. It's around $250, so I don't think I'll be buying some anytime soon.

Patron is like the Absolute of the tequila world. It's good, but you're paying a lot more than you should just because of the name. I know this is subjective, so take it for what it's worth. Some people absolutely love Patron, but I don't think it's all that. I will say that it is amazing when you chase it with a slice of orange. But at $45 a bottle, I shouldn't have to be chasing it with anything. But that's just my opinion. Like I said, other people who drink way more tequila than I do love the stuff.

I forgot to add, I just tried Partida Reposado the other night and it's suuuuper good. I saw the bottle up on the shelf and thought it was Chinaco, but the bartender told me it was something else. He offered me a free taste and I was in love. I'm gonna have to try the Anejo now too.

Yeah, but around here, it seems to have won the battle of tequilas, in that, it's pretty much the only stuff in most bars that don't pride themselves in carrying more. I like it, especially the silver, but, jeezuz, serve it to me cold. A local place keeps it on one of those trendy 10 years ago lit from the bottom shelves behind the bar, which, of course, heats the shit to about 120 degrees. dumbasses. Keep it on ice, so called professionals.

    Free---the price is always right.

1800 is OK, not a big TQ fan, unless it is mixed with something.
