post control slide @ snowbird 12/7

line skiers left of the k12, upper cirque -jaws area

On skiers left on this line, steep rollover w/ tons of rocks/ cliffs.

snowboarder cuts the slope, pocket looked fat.. i was like " wow that is def. going to move."

no sooner then i say that to may self does it fractue and go, promptly washing the snowboarder about 400-500 vert in little more the 3 seconds. He rode down more then half of the upper cirque in the slide, powered out and rode away.

Soft slab wind pocket 1.5- 2 ft deep, 35-50 feet across.

fuggin crazy... so surreal to see someone getting washed on a run i was one second away from dropping on, and crazy to see a slide post contol @ the bird.

good to remember.. even thought its inbounds blah blah blah.

Oh, and the skiing was off da hook!

they can't predict everything but it's not all that strange to see a post control slide there. i've only been at the bird for a few years but i've seen my fair share of slabs. the funny thing is that most of them i've seen have been started by boarders. i'll probably get beat up over this one but i guess it's because of their nature to traverse the slope.

Its the Bird. Wilbur seems to have this same problem. Gad 2 also, apparently

slope cut or the slope cut loose? either way it still went. most of the ones i see are west aspect off the wilbur area. people come in and traverse across the slope, effectively cutting the tensile strength of the new slab. it usually happens when there is a poor bond like a crust or a density inverison.

the gad 2 one had some trollers looking pretty well stumped. most of the pros only had theories. they're still debating it and i'd love to hear the conclusion.

Saw that yesterday, wondered how it happened.
