Astro, you've got an awesome eye for setting up excellent shots. Wonderful use of light, good white balance, nicely saturated colours, razor sharp focus and great composition. As a photo geek myself, I appreciate that stuff doesn't happen by accident.

Equipment is only a small part of the story. That said, I'm curious to know a bit more about the technical details:

What kind of glass are you using? I'm wondering if I really need that 400mm F2.8 to get shots like this...

Is it wrong that yesterday as I was the second person crossing over to the shoulder, I thought to myself: "I hope that AstroPax guy is around, cause I really want to see myself on the internet"?

    Sweet, sweet pics.

I hope we don't get attacked by that anti-geek dude that posts here.

Anyway, most of my shots are taken with a Nikkor 70-200mm VR f/2.8:

Shit, a 400 2.8 would be really, really sweet! But I would hate to be the one carrying it around. My 200mm with the attached HB-29 hood is bad enough.

I think any good 200mm zoom is adequete. Don't cheap-out on the glass. But obviously, you already know that!

    Nikon D2X, at either 5 or 8 frames/second, usually shutter priority...at a minimum of 1/1200 second...but 1/2500 second is better.

    Center-weight metered.

And, in sunlight, a -6 EV dialed-in to prevent clipped highlights. White balance set manually, measured off of the snow.

Fucking-A, maybe we need a ski photo pic tech geek forum here!

Dude, you can get great shots with a sub-$1000 D70 also.

This pic is from last year (Skier B. Hatchett ripping the Sugarloaf Chutes), Nikon D70:

wish i had the money to throw down, but for now i just have been using my canon powershot a610. fits right in my pocket and is ready in about 2secs to shoot. i just have to stop being a jerkstore and make sure i set the shizz right first. (2.5fps, f2.8-8.0, and 35-110mm i think, cant recall) under 300. it's a good start.

    dude out

A good camera doesn't make you a photog.

Nice photos AstroPax, almost motivation enough for me to upgrade, but that would mean a lot less time on snow this season. What do you carry those mothers around in, just a Pelican in a backpack? You must be quick getting them out to get such good shots in-bounds on a pow day.

Agreed. Astro consistently lays down some of the best shots out there, this guy gets good pics out of every storm that pukes up the LCC so long as he is mobile. I've seen other guys with similar cameras who have less than spectacular results.

Awesome shots Astro, again... I am always amazed at how well balanced your pics are.
