Thread: Recommended Skis & Bindings List

    Hi everyone-

I just got yelled at for posting this in the ski/snowboard section. So I figured before starting another new thread I'd put it in here and see if I can get any advice.

I scored a pair of Garmont Megarides for absurdly cheap at an REI garage sale, and had been meaning to get into backcountry skiing for a while anyway. So I wanted to set up a pair of AT skis this summer/fall and get into to it in the winter.

I know basically what I want in terms of a ski- high 170s length and pretty wide (~90 mm waist length) because I'm planning to mostly do touring as opposed to downhill. But as far as bindings go, I'm pretty lost. I have never bought a new pair of skis before, so I'm not sure how buying the ski, the binding, and mounting really work. I also am not too sure about what sort of binding I'll need- a fellow in a shop recommended Dynafit (and I saw the long post on those already; thanks), but would I be okay with some proprietary binding (say, from Black Diamond)?

Any preferences/opinions/warnings/advice will be immensely appreciated. Or if anyone has an old pair they're trying to get rid of, let me know.

    Thanks!

    -Sam

    1) Get the ski you want. Cheaper the better, you will trash them.

    2) Get a Dynafit binding (do a search. Only reason not to get them is if you can score a deal on a Fritchi, Duke/Baron, or Naxo or if you can't deal with Dynafiddle)

    3) Take you skis, bindings and boots to a store that says they have and can mount Dynafit bindings (you might want to ask around here to see what shops in your area are reccomended) and leave it their hands.

Has anybody skied the new Marker Jester and Duke series? The Jesters are beauties! They may be my next binding if people can give a strong enough recommendation.

No one knows what you're talking about. Elaborate, please.

fuck that ,I'm sorry I don't have time to read every thread. It's not like I'm trying to fuck with the forums. People are massive dicks on this site, fuck. People really need to chill out not everybody is here to cause havoc because they accidentally repeat things that have been discussed before.

    My search timed out.

Go to search, type "marker" "duke" "jester", hit the button and you´ll see what I mean.

It´s not an accidental repeat if you don´t even try to find out on your own.

maybe I'm on an iPhone and searching is harder without a computer but rather a 3.5-inch screen. People just don't need to be so rude about these things, a simple "type this" would have sufficed.

The AK made Bros are stiffer, pw. And the 183 Bro soft is softer in the tip only.
This is due to a different core material and triax carbon fiber/glass cloth.
Though very stiff underfoot, the 183 simply skis wonderfully in either flex.
We recommend the soft flex for people who want easier turn initiation and a little help with the flotation.
We'll be getting them in late October.
And they are already going very fast.

Love my Stockli Stormrider XXXLs - just an awesome ski that will blast through anything, crud, pow, bullet proof - the lot. Spent a week in Greenland in May and was v mixed terrain. Took them and a pair of fat-ypus as was hoping for pow - the fat-ypus were just too flappy for the mixed terrain. Got to say the Volkl Mantra is a damn fine ski too tho, bot more waist on it compared to the stockli means a little more fun when you have to ski across a piste.

No. I'd almost like to say the difference is night and day.
The US skis are totally different than the Euro skis.
Euro Bros are typically stiffer. Rounder flex on the US Bros.
The Lhasas, well, those are a whole new category of ski.
Hey, this is a review thread, so here's marshalolson's review of the ski of the future - The 196 Lhasa Pow......

I have mine with p15's (turntables) and they're fine, normally I would've gone for something with a bigger hole pattern on the heel because the turntable hole pattern is only a square inch but so far it's been fine. Skis came drilled for turntables at a similar BSL so I wasn't gonna go re-drilling anything
Maybe think about jesters, people seem to like those with bents
