    Question What's this about?

    From DB skis....

    always bet on black
db moves to make skis only in black. our black topsheets offer the best combination of both light weight and durability with the highest performance. at the moment, in order to produce the other colors successfully we have to add additional weight. the only dissadvantage of the black topsheet is that at times, in mid-range temperatures, snow can adhere to it. when howard head introduced his revolutionary metal ski, he designed in black. in the same way, db's revolutionary skis will begin their life in all shapes and sizes as black skis. we really like the way it looks, and black gives us the ability to make the lightest, highest-performance top on the market.

I've bought some of these skis so obviously your thoughts are welcome

edit: I know.......sorry.......should be tech talk.

There are two ways that they could have been colouring the skis: 1) with a printed layer (weight approx 10g) between the top carbon layer and the topsheet or 2) with a pigment in the top epoxy layer (weight approx 10g). Doesn't seem like a big deal in terms of weight to me.

There are downsides to both these methods though; 1=extra cost (screen printing odd shaped materials is pricey) or 2=extra brittleness in the epoxy and tricky to get the same result each time. My guess is that it's down to one of these reasons or just the fact that it complicates poduction for a small operation. If your skis come out looking anything like this board I'd be happy:

Cheers mate. 10g is hardly worth bothering about, weird how snow sticks to black though.

    From Stephan Drake:

[QB]We are currently at the workshop exploring a problem with paint adhesion in our early colored skis. Ski tops are a tough proposition. We want our tops to be as lightweight and at the same time, as durable as possible. For the moment, we can only guarantee both aesthetic durability and light-weight in black skis. [/QB]

I've got all the stuff together to make the skis but haven't started making them yet. I'm using our spare room and my girlfriend has got friends coming to stay with us for New Year so I can't start until they go (the smell of epoxy hangs pretty badly...) Also changed my plans slightly and decided that a vacuum press would suit my needs best so need to get hold of some bits for that (valves, breather fabric etc). Stupidly, we replaced our fridge a few months ago but I hadn't seriously thought about this project yet so didn't keep th ol pump from it...

Here are my materials. Note the shoe for size - that p-tex will be the width of two skis side-by-side:
