    First Descent sucked

Just got back from this movie. Not worth the $9.25 at all. The previews promised a movie with a lot of big mountain riding by 3 generations of boarders. What you get is 90% stock fotage and interviews (which werent that bad) about the revolution of snowboarding and about 10 minutes of actually riding by these 5 snowboarders in AK.
They didnt go big and overdramatized everything. They brought along Hannah Teeter who sucked and ended up tourqing herself on a kicker they built and she cried because she crashed. I enjoyed seeing the old footage of how the sport was started but that was about it. For a big budget film they did nothing compared to what they could have. Some of the footage of the Chugach is good to see but there really isnt much of it at all.

That sounds like what you'd expect from it, all flash and no cash.

Real snowboarding happens in movies by companies like Absinthe Films and our own TGR.

How was the historical angle? Did they show how the sport has evolved since its inception?

But were there powder turns? If so I would call it better than the majority of snowboard films I have seen.

I went to a pre-trip meeting for J-hole at which they were looping this really soulful and dramatic segment of Travis Rice riding up the tram and looking at how GOOOD it's gonna be. He makes ONE turn in the deep blower and the film immediately cuts to some fucking booter. WTF is up with that? Do snowboarders not like to ride powder?

If there are more than 5 turns in the movie, I'm willing to give it a shot...

umm no, I'm writing an honest review of the movie which I had high hopes for, I usually like most movies even if they arent great.

And there really werent any good big powder shots at all. All the footage they showed in the movie was an opening run which was a relatively easy and wide open with not much snow to knock around. That was followed by them building a kicker and jumping it a couple times. The coolest part is when i think travis rice starts a big slide and almost goes under. Other than that they had a final run that was nothing special.

    worst snowboarding movie ever

i wish i would have seen this before i wasted my movie money.

your review is exactly on point. 3% of the film actually contained cool AK footage. they should've just filmed Terje the whole time. hannah could not be more annoying. farmer, as cool as he probably is, appeared to be a washed out drunk, but still probably my favorite "character".

they just marketed it wrong. i have seen all that stupid snowboarding historical stock footage so many times i wanted a fast forward button.

way too much attention on the human drama.

I believe that would be "the Community Project"....basically, a Travis Rice movie, and that is NOT a bad thing. That guy is unbelievable.

Too bad about First Decent. I will probably see it when it comes on dvd, but I already know what I am getting into. Maybe that was your problem. The true flicks are Community Project, Futureproof and TGR (Jeremy Jones)

I'm far less critical of movies than most on this board, but I would give a thumb's down to First Descent as well. It was as much interview as action, if not more. And the action was just OK. With one possible exception: Travis Rice lands an air onto a big pillow that completely spiders and starts a torrent of snow cascading down the mountain. How in the hell he rode that one out I have no idea, but it was very cool.

Glad I got in for free.

Farmer shouldn't have hit that kicker ("when did it all come to this??...why do you guys have to fly 100 feet in the air??")....the guy is damn good...didn't need to do that.
As for Hanna and the red mop head ( don't remember his name but i know he's big in boarder world)...give em a break. They both admitted this was their first attempt at 50- 60 degree Alaska mountains and both admitted they were really scared. Hanna's what? like 17 yrs old? Would you turn down this opportunity of a lifetime? They chose to put two inexperienced big mountain boarders out there. Two highly skilled riders making their first big mountain debut. So you saw real fear, real tears. Don't blame the riders.
Hanna babysat my kids when she was 12- 14. The only young sitter we had who could talk to us like an adult and provoke thought. I don't know her as annoying.
If you didn't see what you wanted in this movie...it ain't the riders fault.
If it weren't for serendipity, there'd be no dipity at all

Haven't seen the movie, but it really suprises me that a kid like shaun white, who has now killed it in 2 sports on a board, has never ridden a steep slope. I think that speaks volumes about what's wrong with ski/board sports these days.

its a big-budget hollywood snowboard movie. what'd ya expect. hell will be frozen before i shell out $8-10 for a snowboard movie, but i'll still get it from netflix when its released on dvd.

and i met hannah the other day in raleys supermarket and she was really quite sweet and amicable for a teenager, especially after my introduction of "hey, you look just like that famous snowboarder chick." and she's from my hometown in southern VT and now lives in meyers/slt so she's gotta be pretty cool.

    Your bitching about bitching, bitch.

I liked the film for one reason only, FARMER. He had a cocktail in his hand the entire time. Keeping it Real!

What you have to ride steep slopes to be consider "Right"? There is more than one way to look at such a diverse sport.

I've never ridden a snowboard but Terje's line was sick...luckily, from the sounds of it, it was the only part of the movie I saw.
