The tip and tail are soft but they're stiff underfoot. There are quite a few skis out there that are not "stiff" or "soft" anymore. That's why whenever I flex a ski anymore I always flex it 3 ways. I grab the tip and push sorta halfway between the tip and middle. Next, I put my hand behind the point where I just flexed the ski and then flex it in the true middle. Finally, flip ski, grab tail, and flex halfway between tail and middle.
But...
No buts. If you flexed a Seth Pistol (one of the first skis like this) in the traditional way it would seem like the worst noodle you've ever flexed in your entire life. If you used the above method, you'd see that 70-80% of the ski (what's underfoot) is actually quite stiff. Tons of people rip on Pistols and Gotamas. Hell, I weigh 230 and think my Gotamas rail on groomers and kill it everywhere else.
Welcome to the world of progressive flex.
