why would the dentist say...(nsfw-and apparently not cool either)

no skiing this weekend after getting my wisdom teeth out today? seems a little over the top. another dr. made me a special cast for my broken thumb...seems like this would be more dangerous than wisdom teeth.

any dentists out there tell me why? is this dentist just a pussy or is there a medical reason?

I was skiing two days after my wisdom teeth came out. I'd say it depends on how much they hurt. If you can jump around without pain, you're probably OK.

    (I'm sure the Vicodin helped.)

Just make the decision to go or not based on how much pain you're in and whether or not it hurts to jump around a lot. My friend went skiing the day after getting his out and he was fine.

no problem PNW....although in my years of lurking, i have seen much more offensive images.

so, dry sockets can form from exercise and smoking? bummer.

seconded - DRY SOCKET SUCKS you just don't know. My dentist apparrently thought it would be funny to leave a large piece of my tooth still in the socket. About a month later it just showed up in my mouth one day.

Nobody minds the images it's having them appear without warning that gets people in trouble at work.

I felt great for 36 hours after my wisdom teeth. Then spent a week feeling like I'd got whip lash. But I had them done until full anesthetic on the table.

When I had my last 2 wisdom teeth out, I just had local plus gas that gets you feeling pretty good. As they started sawing and drilling and God knows what they do in there, all I could think about was that Seinfeld episode where Kramer goes to the dentist and comes back still numb from the Novacaine and tells Jerry in typical numb-mouth-speak "when they pull that giant needle out I let the expletives fly!" Hilarious.

Then on the way home to my folks house, we stopped at the pharmacy, where the car battery died, so another customer at the pharmacy gave us a ride home with her elementary school kids. Then someone went out to get a milkshake for me and the milkshake machine broke and took like an hour to get back.

So it pretty much went downhill after they finished sawing

Keep and eye on those wisdom teeth. My good buddy just spent a week in the hospital because he first got dry sockets (painful) and then an 3 inch abscess formed. When he first went to the hospital they thought it might have gone systemic. Sepsis is not a good thing. Luckily his blood was clean. However, he was grossly ill. He finally had surgery yesterday to drain the abscess and he is going much better today. The mouth is bacterial infested place and you want that shit to heal without getting infected.

But I may not be the best person to listen too. I never listen to doctors. Hell I was back skiing 4 weeks after reconstructive ankle surgery when I was still suppose to be in a walking cast. You know you body best and how it responds. So do what you want. Doctors have to be cautious in todays litigious society.
You should have seen Little Jerry, Jerry! Flappin' his wings and struttin' his stuff! He was peckin' and weavin' and bobbin' and talkin' trash! He didn't even have to touch him! The other rooster ran out of the ring.

Sking will not increase your risk for dry socket. Smoking definately will. He prob did not want you to go skiing because the increased blood flow could increase swelling. However I don't believe that it would really be a prolbem 48 hours after the extractions were performed. If you're feeling fine I say go skiing. A few years ago I had 2 wisdom teeth surgically extracted and went rollerblading a couple hours after. Big mistake. As soon as my blood pressure increased my jaw started trobbing and I ended up with tremendous swelling. Ice down the area for the first 24 hours and if ur feeling fine feel free to shred this weekend.

PS This is coming from a dentist that went boarding in tahoe 1 week after fracturing the bone under his eye boarding in vermont...

I don't know about you when I got my wisdom teeth out I was completely wrecked. And by wrecked I mean uterly fucked up.

I got knocked out cold by some pretty little thing.

Halfway through eyes open see blurry things and a tooth come out. I hear "Oh no honey go back to sleep." and feel her reach for the IV. It goes dark again.

I wake up and try to be Billy Badass. Get up stumble knock my head off the wall before the nurse catches me. I vaguely remember getting into the wheel chair. I have no memory of the ride home.

I get home and my sister takes out the gauze they put on my gums before I choke on it on my way to sleep. 2-3 days of spitting up blood and a vicodin diet. Lasted 2 days on the vics before my stomach was tore up. Had 3 out of 4 teeth impacted and one was just a stuborn bitch to get out.

I had a great wisdom teeth experience. I received intraveneous valium in the morning with the "pull" and was drinking beer that night after a 4 hour nap. I recall chewing tabacco within a few days too. Go ski unless you feel the onset of dry-socket. I aint a dentist but I am a lawyer, and I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.
