JH Tram - 3 replacement options

The surface lift should be interesting. They say it will be inoperable about 20% of the time due to wind. It'll make for some interesting powder days when everything is blown down except the gondy. It's the best option they had and at least there will still be access to the bowl.

Interesting in terms of fisticuffs and riots at the base of the Gondi??

The good news is if we work really hard on pleasing our customers and get 40% of them to come back year after year, we could have the funding for a new tram in 2 years! I learned that in the last 4 hours of a motivational speach... I don't think the lady giving the speach really had a clue how ski area revenue works.

I think yesterday was the hardest $80 I've ever earned.

This really seems to be poor reasoning. In the intervening two years they lose out on summer revenue that the tram earns. I thought that the tram was a decent revenue generator in the summer months as well. If that's true then the only real solutions are new tram or gondola from the base area. The restaurant at the top makes sense from a business standpoint on a year round basis. People will stay there for a meal and will buy shit from a shop at the summit if they provide the opportunity. I can understand the strategy, but they seem to punch some serious holes in their own capital outlay arguments the way they are outlining their options.

Why would Option C necessarily create so many headaches in the Gondi line? Since the planned increase in lift capacity on the Gondi of 600 people/hr is greater than the capacity of the planned Option C tram (or the capacity of the current one, for that matter), I don't understand why you necessarily have some sort of line-up armageddon at the base. And from what I can tell, there is still more room to add even more cabins to the Gondi if necessary.

I think the smart option would be option A, because they $20 a person for one tram ride up & down during the summer. It would cost the most, but would be easiet one for the state to finance plus JH wants the "most Vert. Rise in the usa".

There won't be a huge line at the bottom of the tram, but there will be one at the gondi. Even on a low-traffic day there's a bit of a line for the gondi. Now take all the traffic that the original tram had and add it the gondi line. That's a extra few hundred skiers per hour. That line will get longer and longer as the cue builds up.

If they're worried about wind on a gondola, build a dual-cable gondola (Funitel?) like Squaw has. That thing can move thousands of people in gales that shut down the tram.

You got the right idea there. Those things are all over Europe. Be curious to see the price of one of those compared to a normal gondola.
