    Pieps DSP upgrade info

    Sorry for the xpost from the Slide Zone, but it is a tech issue as well:

    Just got this e-mail.

    The Pieps upgrade is finally here!! We will be taking care of the upgrades here at Liberty Mountain.
    Please read the following attachments explaining more about this volunteer upgrade and how to get your beacon to Liberty Mountain.

    If you are unable to read these attachments they are also on our website www.libertymountain.com

    If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 800-366-2666.

    Thank for your continued support!

    $20 for testing, S&H. I called them and they said Ootards can come by the shop between 8-5 and get it done there.

    The upgrade form is here:

    I just spoke with Liberty Mountain about the upgrade because I didn't know what the upgrade was for. First of all, those guys are super cool. Second, the upgrade will allow the DSP to detect older beacons that are out of the 457 range by allowing a brief period called a "window" where it will search for other frequencies when in search mode. The upgrade will also allow for an additional 5 to 8 meters in range in search mode.

    So it'll act the same as the other beacons out there now

    Here's there bullet points:

    * Faster search
    * Improved multi burial scan
    * Enhanced ability to locate a broader range of beacon signals
    * Improved range
    * Beacon Diagnostics report for optimal performance
    * Longer battery life

    Well, the frequency drift finding problem was one of the digs people used to make against the DSP. I'd also heard they've improved the 'ghosting' problem. Like I said, I'll ask 'em about it today - any other questions anybody has I can address to them?

    It was my understanding, and it is my experience, that the 2 are related. My 7 year old, well cared for Ortovox F1 shows up as anywhere from 1-2 burials 1 of which intermittently appears and disappears rendering the much ballyhoed multiburial mode useless. I'm interested in what improvements you find after the upgrade heard enough spin.

    That's pretty sweet, especially considering the fact it had a great range already. On a practice course, I can consistently pick up a signal once I get about 50-55 meters from the target. Occasionally it's even further. Extra range is always welcome.

    I need mine this weekend for some bc and some beacon practice with some buddies but I'm definitely sending it in next week. I will post some feedback when it returns.

    cj001f-I get some ghosting on my DSP when I go with friends using Ortovoxes typically in closer ranges ie 2-10m. I have an SOS too and never had that problem finding it with my DSP so we'll see if the upgrade takes care of that.

    Hmmm. I haven't encountered this problem, using my old F1 and/or F2 on transmit. The 'ghosting' usually does show up on multiple burial scenarios, and for me has been transitory - I move the DSP a meter or so and the ghost will disappear. So long as I'm expecting this, and anticipate the solution, it's not really a problem.

    I'll ask, and if they can actually do the upgrade while I'm there, I'll test it out.

    But if you show up at a slide and don't know what to expect, it can be a problem. Is that beacon appearing/disappearing my DSP or someone with a beacon damaged in the slide?

    edit: what tweaks me is my 1,5 month old DSP (shipped from LM), is, as I suspected, the older 1.7 firmware and now it's $20 to upgrade the thing.
