Super computer geek question... P4 related

What would you use a thermal pad or paste to prevent overheating? I probably won't be overclocking and haven't used Intel for awhile, so don't know what's best. Thermal pads that come with AMD retail processor boxes seem to work just fine, do P4s come with something like that too?

Thank you, thank you very much.

Intel CPUs have a thermal paste that works fine as an interface to the cooling fins and fan. Its included (already applied) in the standard retail pack CPU/cooler assembly. If you are a tweaker you might go for a liquid cooling system, but geeze; get away from the computer and go skiing. Bragging rights for a fast system don't last long. I built a system last year using top end 3.4 Mhz CPU, OCZ gold memory, Radeon 9600 video subsystem, power supply, cooling and multiple RAID 0+1 drive components on an ASUS MB. I overclock 20% and never had a cooling problem using the standard paste/fan.

Thanks, Cirquerider. That's what I wanted to hear, I'm not going to mess with it, it's going to be my uncle's home machine and he doesn't really need anything special.

I would go skiing, but looking at Tahoe weather is depressing the shit out of me, so I'm probably gonna go drinking here in a few.

Arctic silver II is the best thermal paste. But the stuff that comes with the CPU should be more than adequate if you're not overclocking.

paste works best, but whatever came with it should work fine. If it's a retail proc, keep all the stock cooling equipment, as if it fries, you can get it replaced.
