    ***Official Utarded Thread 11/15/05***

Today was good. We need a new thread for today.

As some of you may recall, I wasn't really jonesin' to ski, due to the late ski season last year, lack of snow this year, and other crap that was keeping me busy. Well, as I saw the snow totals pile up yesterday, and the forecast for bluebird skies today and no more snow for a long time, today was to be the day. Called DanTheMan in the afternoon - he called me back a few hours later and it was on. I got all of my shit ready last night: waxed the skis, put the rack on my car, skins on my skis, packed up my pack, checked my beacon batteries (95), etc. Finally stoked to go skiing.

Slept in until 5 AM, picked Dan up at 6, and headed up. We were going to pull into the Wildcat lot, but they had just started plowing and we were told we had to park on the road by Grizzly. Plan B: ski Greeley Bowl - it has a good aspect for snowfall, and is fairly grassy underneath. It was cold as we got started, but not too bad. The sun was not yet up, and the top 1/4 of Superior was seeing sunlight. It was so great to be in the mountains on a cold, clear day with fresh snow.

There was a skin track already set up Greeley Hill, so naturally, we followed it, except for a few shortcuts on the flatter sections. I like going straight up on my tank treads, a.k.a. Spatulas with full fitting skins. Only 3 or 4 people ahead of us, and 3 tracks on the whole face. As we got up to piss pass, Particle said hello, then slutted for the camera. Dan and I took a quick lap beside the tracks already set - definitely some sweet turns. I would love for snow like that for 3000 feet - super fast, dense pow, no crust. Spatulas tear that shit up!

2nd lap, we had to go for more. The stability was good, so we headed for Gunsight. Skinned back up to piss pass, went around the back (front?), took a detour, tried again, and finally gained the ridge higher up. As we were getting ready for our run, a friendly telemarketer dropped in first. I guess it was OK - he was the guinea pig, and there was still plenty of room. I wanted Gunsight, even though I'd be coming in from the side about 50 feet from the notch. Super Sweet. So rad being the first one in, hauling ass, wonderful snow, and maching out the exit across the flats. Dan stayed in the sun and ripped some huge turns down high Greeley.

Today did not suck. Perhaps some pics will follow, although we weren't in full phUnk slut mode.

Today was fully sweet. Some of the smoothest nicest snow ever. And for the most part all those who were climbing Collins-side did us the favor of not showing up 'til around 9. Did 3 shoulder laps and a warm-up all before 10:15. Untracked each time. Blower on a foot or more of creamy windblown. Rock-fest Did I mention how sweet today was?

CS took the same photos at DTM! (same framed shot of Superior, and of Greeley)

On the way up - first sunlight:

    Superior:

Me ripping the shit out of it. OK, not really, but it's the best action shot we got.

    Greeley after our first run:

You'll have to imagine how sweet the turns were in our second run. Hint: really sweet.

    Today was fun indeed.

    Unknown maggot on Baldy Shoulder.

The lure of the obvious was too tempting to not look at. So we hiked up there, knowing today would likely not be the day to ski it. But we decided to get some exercise and look anyway.

A couple pillows on the approach were sensitive to my fat ass weight on them.

The brutal overnight winds confirmed the obvious. We roped up and dug a pit just to take a look, and of course, did not ski it.

So we took a long and pleasant run down into never never land. It was nice to get away from the pre season noise of Alta, and the hoards of people.

We came back from there and skied what I guess is called Backside. No one was around, and the snow was absolutely perfect.

Gramps having fun. No rocks were hit. But it was lapped.

Found a great exit run too.

Can I get in on this group too? (seriously)

I have the Bear River Range low angle group, but the Jedi, Crackhead, Dawn weirdos are never going to accept the likes of this guy.

Oh man Lumpy, I am part of that crew. I just swallowed 800mg of Ibuprofen, my back is messed up again. Funny how when you get old, stuff just hurts for no apparent reason.

When we got out of the car today, the only person walking upright and painfree was Young Jedi Gramps. The rest of us were hunkered over, stiff, sore, and needing our can of Ensure.

Old guy crew? Can I play? Sounds like the perfect pace for me...
I thought about going this morning, then went back to bed; but redemmed myself at 10am by going for a 6 mile run...

Incidentally, with the air quality forecast to rapidly deteriorate, the mountains will be the only place to go play, in just a few days...

I read in the Herald Journal today that our air quality is about the same as being in a room of second hand smoke, wtf????

Seconds my wanting to head out with Stoy this weekend for some recon.

    Edit: And I quote:

"Cache Valley's average level of PM 2.5 over the past three years is comparable to living with a spouse that smokes half a pack of cigarettes each day in terms of exposure per person, according to the study results made public late last week"

Greeeeaaaaat, glad I moved back to such good air. And I quit smoking, dammmit, don't they know this???

Old guy, low angle crew, yep, think I can hang.

Excellent day. I must qualify CS' pics of me with the fact that I was on TELEMARKETING GEAR, thus the slightly awkward stance. And yes I pussed out and made alpine turns on all but the most mellow aspects of Greeley Hill. Fun fun fun

I have no reference for this, but I read an article somewhere that said there was a station in Utah that reported that they had horribly polluted air. And after years of reporting the same thing someone noticed the meter was broken/clogged/otherwise reporting bad data for all that time. Fixed it and whaddya know - the air was fine.

Oh man, thank you guys. I've been stuck finishing my basement for a solid month now. Every spare minute and dollar is put in downstairs. Thanks for the stoke boys! Can hardly wait to go skiing. Im signed up for an av 1 course the second week of December so hopefully soon I will be able to join the old guy group for a couple tours . On the other hand Im installing the projector tonight so the 77" screen and surround sound is about to rock the house!
