Summer is here in New Zealand, so I figure I might as well stop looking wistfully at my skis stacked sadly in the garage, dreaming of all the pow they're not about to ski back in Tahoe (until February).
Last weekend, Paul and I headed up to Craigieburn for a last-ditch effort at skiing for 2005, and we were richly rewarded with some killer corn skiing.

Yes, winter is gone. Time to dust off the boardshorts, wax up the boards, and take advantage of the sunshine, warm breezes, and uh, "warmer" water.

And summer means grilling. All the best grilling I've ever done at home on Lana`i occurs on old 55 gallon oil drums left behind from the good old days of pineapple plantation earthraping at the hands of Dole, making them easy to find in landfills. Other smaller options are old hot water heater cylinders, and of course, everybody's favorite, the empty beer keg.

This weekend was a beauty here in Christchurch. I tried my hardest to get into the warm weather and not to think about the dumpage at Baker/Crystal and the Winter Storm Warning for Tahoe that would have had me bouncing around the room in eager anticipation of the season's first storm. Feeling nostalgic for home, I decided it was time to build myself a grill.
Several backyards later, I found my prey. Once drained of Steinlager, she was ready to be split and divulge her inner secrets in order that I might kill and grill some sweet, sweet animal flesh.
No pics of the first part, but three metal cutting wheels and two $13 angle grinders (really, they're NZ$13 at The Warehouse) later, she was in half. Stole some hinges off an unused door in the flat, threw some tek screws in there, and polished up the edges with the grinder, and it was time to brainstorm the stand.
Luckily, I had the foresight earlier on at the beginning of the season at Temple Basin to score some of their throwaway skis form their dumpster. I used to make adirondack chairs out of old skis back in the day, so I've got some experience using them a building material, so I figured why the hell not?

Getting there....
And there she is.
We though small shelves on each side would be beneficial for placing the meat about to go on the grill on one side, and for the dish of sweet cooked meat on the other. And what better to make a shelf from than the end of an old snowboard?
Viola. A grill made out of skis and a keg and a snowboard. Gonna make the actual "grill" tonight after a quick stop at the sheet metal shop on the way home from work, and then I'm going to grill the shit out of some steaks.
