Green Fireballs

I was recently having a conversation with someone about these. They're pretty rare, and most people haven't seen one. I've been lucky enough to see about 3 of them in years past...and one again last night. Basically, when a large enough particle (say a pebble instead of a bit of dust) hits the atmosphere it turns into a giant falling star and leaves a brilliant streak across the sky. The trail always seems green to me also. One of the first ones I saw was insanely huge. I thought a house was coming down to earth and armageddon was upon us. Anyway, here's the reason for last night's display:

So be sure to keep an eye on the sky the next week. These things are so spectacular though, it'll be hard to miss unless your back is turned to it.
