    Salomon boot sizing ????

Is there a general rule to boot sizing that you want to get a boot meant for a shoe size smaller than your normal one???

According to Salomon's size chart (for my 9.5 US women's shoe size) I should be buying a 26.5, HOWEVER, My old Salomon's are 25.5 and my Atomics (the ones i have finally killed and need replaced) look to be the same size, though i can't find the actual size on them anymore.

So the dilema here is....do i go by their size chart or do I go with the same size i've always worn even though their chart says it is for a shoe size of 8 when i am a 9.5???

I say go down 2 shell sizes for a performance fit. I wear an 11 shoe (29.0) and a 27.0-27.5 boot (9-9.5). As Marshal said, there is no substitute for trying boots on.

Go by the shell fit and only the shell fit. If there are questions then refer to the shell fit. After shell fitting you can look at the size on the boot and answer the question.

I think what L7 is saying is shell fit them .....

    25 should be a better fit/bet

but why not shell fit them, the salomons have been the same for many years (X Wave, cross max, rush, mens and ladies all are the same shell shape)

word, thanks for the input. is there a general rule of shell fitting? I'll have to try them on myself at work. is it how many fingers you can fit in there?

    so many answers .......

but with BOOT fitting, with your toes touching the front of the shell of the boot (remove liners) you should have 1-2cm behind your heel and the shell of the boot NO MORE.

If you use a custom foot bed or any sort of foot support device do the shell fit with the unit in the bottom of the boot (no liner) and your foot weighted.

Sounds like you are working at a shop. This is a rite of passage for working in a shop this time of year. In fact while you're at it shell fit every model boot in your shop to get a feel of the shape of each boot relative to your foot. Shell fit a size too big and too small to judge the size increments while you're at it.

It will be time well spent. Knowledge is a good thing and it comes from experience.

I'm a 9.5 street shoe (27-27.5) and went for a 26. I might have been able to make a 25 work, but was tired of losing toenails....

i don't work in a shop per-se....more of an online gear retailer, for whom i do product photos. i just tried on the 25.5 and while i don't have a ruler handy, i had about the width of a fat highlighter behind my heel. maybe a bit more. i guess i'll have to measure that later, but i'd say it falls in the 1 to 2 cm range. And i do plan to take my new boots into a real boot fitter once they are officially mine.

One finger (behind the heel, w/toes touching but not pressed against front of boot) for a performance fit, two for a comfort fit.

Sounds about right as long as the rest of the shell is fairly close and you used the footbed to control the foot elongating. If you have more width or room over the instep than you need than the boot will still be big. You could try next size down or better to go to a different shape shell.

Don't know what last you are in for starters but Salomon offers 3 or more lasts and of course other manufacturers have different shapes/widths.

oh geees, now you're startin' to confuse me! I already ordered the boots though, soooooo, i'm gonna keep the fingers crossed and if the bootfitter tells me they are wrong then maybe i'll have to sell them. But every other time i've bought boots in a retail boot shop, they put me in salomons. I only went atomic that last time cause we had an atomic proform through my ski team in college.
