    TGR search function tips

    Tips for search function JONGs:

The search function on the board won't let you search anything under 3 letters in length, so you can't search for "XX" if you want to look up a Rossi Bandit XX.

The wildcard (*) function lets you search for anything 3 letters in length or longer. Example: Rossi* will generate a search for Rossi, Rossignol, Rossignar, etc.

The search function also won't let you search for any extremely common words, like "ski." It just won't. Be more specific in your search.

If you install the google toolbar, however, you can run searches for anything of any length, no matter how common the word. You can search for "the" if you really want to. Get the google toolbar here:
    http://toolbar.google.com/

It installs a new toolbar across your IE browser that lets you run a google search from any screen -- or lets you run a search on any website, using the google search engine. Enter the word(s) you want to search for ("whelk"), click the "search" drop-down menu in the google toolbar, and select "current site." Voila!

Google's toolbar also supports wild card searches; read the instructions on the toolbar for an explanation.

(Somebody should make this a sticky so I don't ever have to type all this in again, and we can avoid the same threads over and over...)

Note re: adding Booleans to the search.

For example, I can find all posts with the words 'Tabla' AND 'Rasa' by typing in "Tabla+Rasa" into the search field.

I can find all posts with the words 'Tabla' OR 'Rasa' by typing "Tabla Rasa" into the search field.

But I'm not sure how to do the NOT function, like, say, Angry NOT Whelk.

    Anybody?

edit to add: I don't want to use the Google toolbar, since I already have something like it in FireFox and I don't want additional clutter.

Angry NOT Whelk? I think they're angry by definition. Your problem lies in its answer.

But that's my question - what if I wanted to find out about all the other angry crustaceans out there, but didn't want to wade through the umpteenth "Angry Whelk" thread to find 'em?

Using the google toolbar, this is the search (to search TGR):

    angry -whelk site:tetongravity.com

Click on google's "advanced search" for explanation - they make it really easy to do.

Cool. It works in the google toolbar in FireFox, too, I see.

I got some "angry beavers" and iceman and D-Day as "angry phuckers", but no angry whelks! Thanks.

If you go to www.google.com and type in 'angry whelk site:tetongravity.com/forums' you can use Google's tried and true search function to find what you want.

Works much better than the built-in forum software.

google searchbar's some pretty invasive spyware so if you don't feel like sharing your browsing habits you probebly shouldn't download it.

I forget the specifics now, but google gives you an optional set of "features" you can choose to install when installing the toolbar -- I think that's where the spyware comes in. I've been using the minimum installation on the toolbar, and no spyware reports from Spybot or MS Anti-spyware.
