Worldwide Web (Ski Press)-For its latest theme-writing challenge, titled Ski Sounds, ski-literature Web site Aspect Journal (www.aspectjournal.com) asks the question: “When did you first really listen to a mountain?”
“Bullwheels. Zippers. Clicks. Grinds. Laughter. Rumbles. Hip hop. Silence,” reads the text on Aspect Journal’s Ski Sounds contest page. “Skiing is full of familiar and iconic sights, but its sonic menu is complex, often subtle, and all its own.”
The idea, says site editor Kristopher Kaiyala, is simple: to penetrate one of the core experiences of dedicated skiers. “Everyone knows what mountains look like, at least in a general sense,” he says. “But the noises that mountains—and those who travel in them—make, or don’t make… to know these kinds of sounds requires a certain familiarity that only comes with experience. That’s what we want people to write about.”
The Ski Sounds submission period began in late September and ends on Nov. 7. Entries must be fewer than 600 words and the top five essays will be chosen for publication. The contest is Aspect’s seventh since going online in October 2003. For more submission guidelines previous contest winners, visit: http://www.aspectjournal.com/themes.html
