    Anthems - what are yours

I don't know what other word I can use to describe the kinds of songs that transcend time and space, that seem to remind you of possibilities and potential. Songs that remind you not of an experience, but of a feeling..... Almost like a soundtrack of your life.

Some that do that for me:

    Solsbury Hill
    Pressure - David Bowie
    Sweet Home Alabama
    Baba O'Reilly

I know they're different for everyone. These are not even my "favorite songs", but songs that when I hear them move me to a different place. What others?

for some strange reason, this song always reminds me of the summer in between 10th and 11th grade.... tlc waterfalls normally this kind of stuff isn't my thing, but that song is linked in my memory to that summer.

weezer my name is jonas reminds me of being a stupid high schooler, driving up to the ski hill after school on friday. actually, most of that cd is kind of like a soundtrack for those memories.

i'm just now recognizing how poor my tastes in music must appear...

Funny you mention that one - it's permanently linked to the first summer I spent working in Geneva. And for some reason it's the first thing that came to mind while reading this thread. Odd.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and Sweet Child O' Mine always causes me to smile and turn up the volume),

American Pie--Don McLean (will be played at my wake someday)
Changes in Lattitude, Changes in Attitude--Jimmy Buffett (title says it)
Three Little Birds--Bob Marley (early morning chill-out song--great to remember when some wacko cuts you off on the drive to work)

    peace,

This’ll probably revoke my music license but:

    ELO - Showdown
Marley - No More Trouble / Them Belly Full (Live only)
    OCMS - Wagon Wheel
Digable Planets - Nickel Bag / NY 21 Theme: The Art of Easing
    Tribe: Electric Relaxation
    De La: 4 More

acostiga: It's funny you mention Waterfalls. That and SWV Right Here remind me of HS (specifically driving to Charlotte to visit a friend and hit up strip clubs).

Honestly, a lot of the best memories are induced by some of the worst music. Brian Adams I Do It For You (which sucks beyond reproach) always reminds me of school dances, which definitely didn't suck.

    Wharf Rat - GD
    Genesis - Hot Tuna
    Fishin - Elvin Bishop
Am I Loosin - Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Legalize It - Peter Tosh

    Am I Loosin

I recall when I used to come home never had a dime
But Lord I always had a good time
And I recall drinkin' wine with one of my friends
Lord, I can't go back again

    (Chorus)
Am I losin' my own way back home
Am I losin' a good friend that I've known
Am I losin' won't you tell me how I've sinned
Why am I losin one of my bets friends

And I recall this friend of mine I knew so well
It goes to show Lord you just can't tell
Now my friend won't talk to me Let me tell you why
he thinks I 've changed because of a dollar sign
    (Chorus)

And its so strange when you get just a little money
Your so called friends want to act just a little funny
    They'll blame you

But I'm not the one that's here to blame
Its you my friend that's really changed
Its a shame, such a shame
    Am I losin' once again

Why these things happen, Lord I don't understand
But Lord it can sure hurt a man
Why my friend won't take me as I am
'Cause your friend Lord is the most important thing

Probably none of you know this tune but "Wild in the Streets" by Garland Jeffries was my number one teen anthem, still a great song.

And You And I - Yes
    Terrapin Station - Grateful Dead
We Can Be Together - Jefferson Airplane
    Problem Child - AC/DC
    My God - Jethro Tull
What's On My Mind - Kansas
Are You Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
    Tomorrow's Dream - Black Sabbath

These all have the "chill factor" for me, as in they seem to stimulate a glandular response which opens the door to awareness of a reality more vast than the mundane can approach, sending a chill up my spine.

This time of year always reminds me of FZ. In the 70's, I used to see him live every year on Halloween in NYC.

You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.
