Portland Mags: Avalanche Book Reading Tonight

Jill Fredston, author of Snowstruck, reviewed in Nov. issue of Powder.

Borders, 708 SW Third St at 7 pm, Tuesday, Nov 1.

Great book, I've read it. Jill is one of two of probably the most knowledgeable avy experts in the country if not the world. Co-author of Snowsense: that little avy guidebook we've all hopefully read. Snowstruck chronicles her 20+ years in Alaska, she has amazing stories. Nice lady too. I'll be there.

She's in Sea-town tomorrow and Sunday. I've read Snowstruck too. Good stories. A lot of the "guide" books tell you to beware human factors. This book will clue you in on what exact a "human" factor is. It's also a damn good read.

Is it much different (aside from including, oh, the past 20 years) from the Snowy Torrents series? Reading the Amazon blurb I can't tell how much it's accident evaluation, avy guidebook or exploratry crap.

It's not a guide book, it's more like a memoir of her life experiences working with avy's. It's a compilation of stories basically, a chronicle if you will. She's a great storyteller. It's a great book to read, because it really makes the aftermath of avalanches (digging, death, evaluation) real.

Jill is a captivating storyteller and a great writer, as well as one of the most knowledgeable persons around when it comes to avalanches and snowpack analysis. Snowy Torrents is boring reading, like a government report. Jill`s writing contains wit and humor and brings the reader into the story. Go hear her if you get the chance.

Agreed. Went and it was interesting and well worth the time. She'll be in Seattle for a couple days now, try to go support her.

Where and when in Seattle? Will be at TGR tomorrow but Sunday sounds good.
