(WSR) Would someone please explain to me...

..why it will be historic if the White Sox win, but not if the Astros win?

I'm not sure, but it's got something to do with those rainbow unis the Astros wore back in the '80s.

Although, to be fair, the White Sox have had some pretty awful uniforms in their history, too.

I don't know sqat, but my guess would be because of Shoeless Joe and the whole Black Sox's mess.

Maybe because the White Sox tried to wear shorts as part of their uniform way back when?

Astros have never been to the WS until this year. Same with the Angels 3 years ago.

Chitown is twice as big a market share in ratings (than Houston)...

I lost interest when my Padres lost in rd1...but they always lose (waaaahhhhh) and no-one cares because our market is the smallest (waaaahhh-wahhhh). I think we have all of about six dedicated fans in the whole country.

Two lowest rated World Series all time: 1984 and 1998 - San Diego lost in both.

I attended one of the NLDS games in 1998 (San Diego vs Astros). Rooting against the home team is rough (especially when they win).

Does Chicago really have twice the market share of Houston? Is that just for the White Sox, or for both teams? (I was always under the impression that the Cubs were more popular than the Sox).

Just being a San Diego fan is tough enough.

Only info I have is based on tv homes in a city...it would be almost impossible to sepatate the data (especially now)...

Nielsen Media Research Local Universe Estimates* (US)
*Estimates used throughout the 2005-2006 television season which starts on September 24, 2005

    RANK-Designated Market Area (DMA)-TV Homes-% of US
    1-New York-7,375,530-6.692
    2-Los Angeles-5,536,430-5.023
    3-Chicago-3,430,790-3.113
    4-Philadelphia-2,925,560-2.654
    5-Boston-2,375,310-2.155
    6-San Francisco/Oak/San Jose-2,355,740-2.137
    7-Dallas/Ft. Worth-2,336,140-2.120
    8-Washington, DC-2,252,550-2.044
    9-Atlanta-2,097,220-1.903
    10-Houston-1,938,670-1.759
    26-San Diego-1,026,160-0.931

Note how SD is one-fifth the percentage of LA...

D - I don't get it. Why did they seperate out San Diego? I assume they included Orange County in the LA numbers, and isn't San Diego just a suburb of OC?

Rule of thumb: If you have your own local news (i.e. CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, WB) then you are your own market. San Diego has its own Locals - they don't rely on KNBC, eg.

For this reason DC and Baltimore are 2 separate TV Markets, despite their being only 30miles apart.

Here is a question: Why are some sports so much better at marketing their sports as a whole (NFL) instead of by team (Yankees, Red Sox)? I can't imagine people saying "If the Colts make the Super Bowl, the ratings are going to suck". Is baseball simply not a good televised spectator sport? It seems like there are mostly casual baseball fans only interested in their team. Boo hoo, the #3 and #10 markets.

Football is a once-a-week event per team...seems to create a bigger deal. To many, Baseball seems endless sometimes with 162 games plus three tiers of playoffs. Be happy...baseball is over soon. Most people probably have not noticed or give a shit.

Dammit I need some snow. Now.
