Dear Paul,
Following our Appeal letter of October last, we have received substantial financial support from people such as yourself, and also significant assistance from the Canterbury Community Trust Inc.
At the Temple Basin Ski Club committee meeting of 5 December 2005, a number of matters relating to the viability of our operations at Temple Basin were discussed:
1.Manager’s Report – we have been able to pursue some new leads for group bookings from schools, and we are optimistic that some of these will result in new groups coming up to Temple Basin to support our facilities. We would, of course, be very interested in getting Contacts from any more schools or interest groups and if you are able to supply these, please send them to
info@templebasin.co.nz.
2.Treasurer’s Report – total donations and grants received since October now total $42,500, and this boost will be sufficient to continue operating with confidence into the 2006 winter season.
3.Department of Conservation – formal advice has been received from DoC that they will allow us a 3 year rent holiday after our Lease is confirmed. This is expected to occur in March 2006.
4.Weather Analysis for 2005 – we have been able to review some of the weather data collected from hut level (1380 m) at Temple Basin which makes plain the freakish nature of the last “winter”season.
Excerpt from ‘The Crystal Ball’ magazine:
July 2005, snowfall 17 cm, rainfall 290 mm, minimum temperature -0.75 deg C
August 2005, snowfall 48 cm, rainfall 155 mm, minimum temperature +0.5 deg C
The committee has resolved to continue operations at Temple Basin, with increased emphasis on providing year-round educational services (school curricula, outdoor education, natural history, ecology and mountain safety), and in the confident hope that it will be another long lifetime before a winter as unfavourable to snow sports as 2005’s occurs again.
On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank you and all of our supporters who have heartened us with their assistance, and done all that can be done to assure the future of our club and its continued activity at Temple Basin.
Kind regards
Martin Toon
President
