    Full Face Helmet

    Well,
I have had too many very close calls the past few years, my head comming to a sudden stop against a tree or rock is starting to worry me? So I have been helmet shopping. i will not be wearing this all the time, just when doing (Some of the things I do)
The cheap (High end) ski helmets do not feel like they offer the kind of protection that I need. I tried on the Giro Mad Max today, I did not like the way it felt. So I did some more helmet shopping.
I believe I want to spend my risky skiing sessions in this helmet

There are many variations from different manufacturers. The Shoei just fits best.
Can anyone give me a reason why I would want a Ski? Specific Full Face helmet over a high end Motocross or Snowmobile helmet.
    Weight difference is 300g.

Snug fit and protection? They are not even on the same planet.

While moto helmets definitely offer a lot more protection, they also come with a huge weight penalty. When I was full face shopping, I tried several on and they were all complete overkill. If you can deal with the extra weight, then go for it. I couldn't and I'm used to wearing football helmets for hours.

In the end I went with the Bell Bellistic. I'm pretty happy with it. On my last Moab trip I endoed and pogo'd off a rock with my head. It put a little crack in the outer shell, but the foam was totally intact. I would have shattered a normal biking helmet.

Another good option would be the Troy Lee Designs D2.

    Thanks Atrty50

I did do a search in Tech talk (Full Face Helmets)

I saw the previous treads. I did try on the Troy Lee Designs (Not D2)
Awsome graphics too! (But was a bit heavyer and did not fit me as well)
I tried on many hemets that cost half what the Shoei costs, but then weight becomes an issue.
My take is the protection is definitly there (Maybe overkill) The VFR weighs 1310g 2.2 lbs Thats only .4 lbs more than a Giro.
Thats why it cost so stickin much.

So for style, I can get the same model in BLACK for 80$ less
But I really like the Rabid Dowg Graphic??

    A $414 helmet?!?! That's even more than a Fox V3.

    FF

    MTT,
Do you need a FF for hucking or everyday skiing? if your droping big stuff{getting up side down} to firm flat landings and at times your knees are slamming into your chin and causing your teeth to crumble and penetrate your tongue in the process, you should go for a true FF. If your skiing fast and dropping the ocassional 20fter on a pow day and not want to sweat your ass off a vented rec helemet w/ bolt on face gaurd should sufice. I only take out the FF on big days and its definitly nice to have on big days{comps} to make you feel safe{in your mind} while doing stupid things you would not normally do.

Generally a full face will not stop knee to chin situations unless you modify it. When you knees come up they come straight up into you're chin(actually under it) so the chinguard would need to actually face down..

I've actually found a fullface for everyday skiing is not worth it. the constant fogging, having to take it off hiking etc, is not worth it for me. Some people have modified their fullface so this doesn't happen, but mine was killer...

MTT - that helmet + all that padding + no vents = A sauna

    400 dollars is absurd.

You can ride your motorcycle to the mountain -- and then hop right on the chairlift! I've never heard of anybody using a DOT approved helmet for skiing. Wow.

I've got the mad max and really like it, but if it doesnt fit, dont buy it. It weighs just as much as my giro nine, due to carbon fiber. I would also look at BMX helmets, if you can find a non ventilated one. Also, pro tec makes some nice ones.

So I still like the Helmet, But I am thinking of going a big more Subdued?

I am might back away from the Troy Lee Design (Shoei) and pick this up instead

no mean to be a dick MTT, but if pro's don't need full moto style helmets, you probably don't. lots of pro's dont even wear fullfaces, a ski fullface will be more than enough protection unless your are on a sled alot.

P.S. if you buy that helmet and do not consistently drop 50 footers and such, i will make fun of you.

I was looking real hard @ the dirt bikes while trying on helmets.

Full face mountain bike helmets are where you should be looking. The best ones are made just like moto helmets, hard shell and all, but much lighter weight.

I wear a Specialized Hucker for both skiing and MTB. It and the Bell Bellistic are your best choices if you have an oval head. If you want bling, Dainese makes some really suave lids, as does Troy Lee.

Try trolling some MTB gear sites like ride-this.com or jensonusa.com.

Here's the Hucker hiding a shit-eating grin on one of my best pow days ever:
