As an outer layer Yea or nay? better for just walking around town after skiing or can you actually get away with wearing it as a first layer in dry conditions?

For sure, you have to be lost to find a place that can't be found, elseways everyone would know where it was
I have one and wear it as my outer layer when it's cold and dry but not ridiculously windy. Works great.
I still think a patriots starter jacket is the way to go. Plenty warm, and that hood...soo sweet
alta what kind is it 600 fill? whats the optimal fill for skiing?

I think so. It's a Sierra Designs jacket that I got on an overstock clearance thing for $40 (75% off) or something last year.
down jackets are for pre & post skiing.
too hot for anay activity that makes ya sweat & if you aren't sweating when you ski you are doing something wrong
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Obviously the whole down jacket thing is for people like me who actually get cold, not you guys who spontaneously sweat as soon as you put skis on your feet. The down jacket is more comfortable than 6 layers under my goretex shell when it's under 10 degrees. Obviously not a good idea for any extended hiking or warm weather, but for lift served skiing and minimal hikes on cold days it works fine for me. A shell and layers is a lot more versatile, but my down jacket has gotten a ton of use - skiing, apres, work, whatever.
They are awful nice if you get stuck out in the ob. I have a Mt. Hardware that lives in my pack.

An outstanding jacket for anyone who goes BC. Instant warms with basically zero weight. If your rich, go with something waterproof/breathable. It'll run ya much more nowever.
Well sha-zammm!! That's a good deal!

I love my faux down jacket, I follow the idea of the belay jacket whenever I ski away from lifts. The times I haven't had it, I haven't rested as much and haven't felt as relaxed or focused for the ski down. I don't wear it when I am moving, but as soon as I stop it is the first thing on, last thing into the pack.
Faux down because it's not much heavier and because down is so suck when wet.

I have one that i bought at the gap for 20 bucks after christmas 3 years ago. never wear it during a storm or hiking or anything, but for freezing ass cold days, its kind of nice. also fits in as part of my jibber costume that i like to don on some nights at wachusett.
Down jackets in the pack on tours are not only indespensible for, standing still times, they also
- stabilize the load and fill out a pack
- extremely useful in a first-aid situation
I just bought this exact jacket in blue last week, it came a few days ago. I wanted a jacket for skiing when its insanely cold out(below 0) or just walking to class when its a little cold out(10-20). Its super light and really comfy but unless its really cold out or I am just standing around outside it gets too hot. Bought an XL tall but probably could have got away with a large tall, its a little big but not too bad.Originally posted by Foggy_Goggles

Its a good coat and super cheap, I was looking at used downs on ebay or something until i saw that on cabelas, great deal.
...tricks deserve applause, style deserves respect
Good advise on the tall. I got the regular and it rides up a bit.
I have a 2xl tall primaloft hooded jacket i got from ll bean a few years back. I bought it for iceclimbing and its sweet to be able to get to a belay station and just throw it right on over your shell and all. I carry it touring too as an emergency super warm layer.
It is freaking huge though. Some people could use it as a sleeping bag.

Down is deadly in Washington, but I have a sweet Marmot Primaloft jacket that is going on 8 years of use now and is still keeping me warm. Primaloft isn't too bad in sleeping bags either - my 10 deg. bag keeps me warm 90% of the time.
OOOOOOOHHHH, I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!
Down vest *under* the shell. No worries about waterproofness, warm as hell, compresses to the size of a big grapefruit, doesn't make you feel like the Michelin Man.
I only use it hiking because it's too warm for skiing. Shell, Windbloc fleece, and a t-shirt has always been enough for me down to about 0F. (Note: assuming I have a good hood or warm helmet.)
I would have thought you too Icy Hot to need a puffy jacket.Originally posted by BakerBoy
