Thumbs down Utah Tourist Pamphlet (Powder Magazine)

As a wee lad growing up in Utah, I was excited to see a image or two every other edition of powder magazine about the home stomping grounds. Now, living in washington, attending college, I purchase a powder magazine and I constantly reminded that utah is the only place worth skiing. Utah is sick, but it is small, and the possibilities there have been accomplished. I can throw a frisbee across the primest skiable acreage in utah. We must move on folks, the land of mormon desecration, while a comfortable warm feeling, should not consume the pages of a magazine that I pick up to read about far out adventures.

I want to read about the endless hidden realms of bc, the turns of south america, etc etc. Now powder does have good articles about exotic places, but when I flip open a magazine to any given page, its probably a photo shot of someone skiing little superior, or poleine pass across from alta. Get some balls and skin more than 1:45 from a two ski areas that are losing their souls faster than your're losing hair, fat-ass. PEACE

P.s. fuck the east coast articles too.

i'd like to read about other places too, infact i hate the fact that they cause more people to move here yearly but this sounds more like a disgruntled ex-employee talking trash about his old employer. sounds more like you miss it.

While November has not yet found it's way into my mailbox, I can't remember an article about going skiing in Utah. What I do remember are articles about althetes who move to Utah and as a result, become professional skiers. Sure, a good amount of the photographs (as you mentioned) come from the Cottonwood Canyons. But are the editors sitting around the light table conspiring to promote the state of Utah while counting their dirty money? I doubt it.

    Well, perhaps...

LCC does seem to be over-represented in Powder lately. Zero approach, prime terrain, tons of snow, of course the photogs love it. I don't really take those pictures as seriously as I do ones that aren't from my backyard, but I bet most people love them.

For sure, edit it a bit, and send it to Powder. Have you read the letters they get? Most aren't nearly that entertaining.

    go to Colorado
better yet, tell everyone you know to go to Colorado
they always get way more super early season snow than we do here in utah
plus their mountain ranges are much larger than a session of "frisbee golf"
even better yet start a magazine and call it "Colorado"
... ya that's it - Colorado - I think after traveling the world over in search of the best and most consistent snow year in and year out plus crazy terrain I'm heading back to Colorado - my first love

I sometimes get bummed when magazines are nothing but pictures of people skiing in Alaska, B.C. and Argentina, particularly when it's pictures of nothing but super remote locations that can only be accessed if you somehow have a month of free time, but enough money for private plane rides across B.C. I like to see some pictures of something attainable sometime. I can't afford a helicopter ride into the Chugach, but I can afford a skin up in the Wasatch. Maybe they should get a little more creative and venture outside of LCC and put up shots of people skiing on Timp or Nebo or something, or maybe they should put up shots of people throwing frisbees across valleys in Argentina. Variety is good. That's my point.

I hear there's good skiing in Japan and Alaska, but I wouldn't know becasue Powder never does stories or photos on anything unless it's in Utah.

when you send that letter to powder, make sure to include the P.S. because that was the final punchline that put it over the edge.

That being said The only thing about the east articles are that some have some pretty cool historic tones that make me feel like I am learning more about why I ski and how skiing got to where it is today. You can't write an article about skiing in the 1930s in the west because no one was skiing out here yet there were in the east.

People were skiing in California in the 1800's.

most articles about the east aren't from the 1930's, they're from the present. I have yet to see pics of leather boot, wool jacket wearing pioneers in powder. I agree with this guy, while its nice to see places you know in magazines, its even bettter to hear about new places you've never even heard of.

Oddly enough, more big tourist pamphlets would pay for both.

It's a good thing they never print any pamphlets or ads for Colorado.
