    Attached or Unattached Hood

I looking at two coats for ski season. Both are on clearance. One is a Columbia Titanium Pressure Drop jacket with an attached hood. The other is The North Face Sondre Acclimate with a detachable hood. I know one is from Columbia which people seem to shit on, but I have had good luck with Columbia in the past. My main concern is that the attached hood could get annoying and hot when its warm. The North Face on the other hand has seemed to take a step back in quality lately.

Personally, I don't like detachable hoods- I think they look bad and don't fit well. And I don't like roll-away ones, either, because they make your collar all constrictive when stowed (I have kind of a thing about having a lot of material bunched up around my throat). Why is the integral hood hotter? You don't have to wear it all the time, just cinch it down when it's not on.

    yup. we think alike.

Plus it looks cooler, extra points for fur.

My mother has a coat with a fur lined hood. She doesn't wear it anymore, but she still talks about it.

As far as the hood being hot I liken it to a hooded sweatshit. when its cold they're great, but when its hot the back of my neck gets too warm, which makes me sweat.

I have an old Marmot Aplinist with detach hood - never used the hood. I have a newer Marmot Alpinist III with attached hood - never wear the jacket.

Hood? We don't need no stinkin' hoods.

those with attached hoods can just roll 'em back and be sure to wash well. Those without hoods, well, not like you had a choice in the matter...

I was once in your shoes (not literally, they were my shoes but....oh never mind). I ummed and ahhhed. "but I don't want a hood. I don't need a hood!" Until someone bought the non hooded variant leaving me helpless and lost. At first I was sad, then I resolved myself to the hooded jacket, thinking "it'll be OK, I can live like this, I can even be happy" And you know what? I love my hood. I've never looked back and consider myself a hooder for life. When a sudden squall hits hiking, you're cosily tucked away under a fold of windproof bliss. When the sun breaks through the greybird afternoon you're defiantly poking out like a brave turtle. Bluebird: you look a lot more like an adventurer than your non-hooded bretheren. So take that step. Become a hooder and embrace a new life. And you can never get hot when you look so devilishly cool.

Well my decision was made for me. the detachable hooded jacket didn't have the right size so I went with the hooded jacket. I usually wear a medium in shirts, but decided to try the same style of coats on at the store. I liked the large size for winter coats. Mediums are too tight in the upper back and arms.

    The next step was color.

You should post a TR about pondering the color selection.
